Gallup Poll Says Tennessee Has Gone Blue?

Posted by Pete Kotz on Wed, Aug 5, 2009 at 2:10 PM

On MSNBC last night, Rachel Maddow reported on a new Gallup poll showing that the country has moved even further toward the Democratic Party during the first six months of this year. In fact, the poll says 37 states are either leaning or turned solidly blue, while only five remain Republican. The big news is that Texas -- yes, Texas -- is now a swing state, with Democratic voters having a slight edge over Republicans. But the even weirder news, for those of you scoring at home, is that Tennessee is now supposedly leaning blue. This would seem an entirely implausible theory, given the fact that we don't even have a functioning Democratic Party. So is the Gallup poll in error? Or have we geeks in politics and media continued to behave as if Tennessee is slightly to the right of Mussolini, while the people have quietly undertaken a dramatic shift to the left?

For a second there, I thought Mussolini was a county in Arkansas. Then I remembered it was a Rod Steiger film...

I laughed so hard when I read this. Preach on, Brother Pete, preach on.

Is it a "Gallop" poll because it's horseshit?

Does this "Gallop" polling organization have anything to do with George Gallup's group?
Otherwise, somebody should sue...

So, do people actually still pay Gallup for polling?

The poll is right. What wasn't reported is that Democrats are the plurality, not the majority in Tennessee. There is a significant number of independents in the state, many of which lean Republican (but also vote for Dems like Bredesen).
Plus Democrat does not equal liberal.
TN is a Dem-leaning state for the right kind of Democrat.

You mean the Democrats that are in no way liberal, right?

Panderbilt did a poll that Obama is neck-and-neck with Romney, it's about as reliable as this thing was...
