Politics / Woods Cowed by Birthers, Corker Can't Say for Sure Obama Is a Citizen

Bob Corker went on Hardball this week and took questions from Chris Matthews on this whole Obama birther thing. Corker claims to know all about just about everything. He knows how to fix the economy, health care, financial institutions, etc. But he's not absolutely certain the president isn't a foreigner.
The courageous senator said variously that "it appears to me that our president is a citizen" and "it looks to me like he's a citizen." But hey, he added, it's a free country so who's to say crazy people shouldn't believe crazy things?
We've received lots of letters in our office from "birthers." They're heart-felt. I happen to feel differently about the issue, but I'm glad we live in a country where people can raise issues that concern them like that.
You know what this pathetic little exchange says to me? The GOP is so under the control of extremists that reasonable party leaders like Corker now are afraid to speak their minds.
