ESPN Radio is Off Nashville's Hot Seat

Yesterday, WNFN 106.7 The Fan announced a format change. Formerly home to ESPN Radio, the new i106.7 will now play top 40. Obviously any move that improves the odds of hearing Daughtry or Vertical Horizon while flipping through the FM dial is no reason to celebrate. But it's hard to think the loss of the Worldwide Leader will cause any Nashville sports fans to break their bobbleheads in anger. ESPN's primary contribution to the airways are their personalities (ranging from the pleasant, like Scott Van Pelt, to the intolerable, like Colin Cowherd) and the way they can somehow turn 15 minutes of national news into 24 hours of coverage. All things you can find on TV or the web. Other than broadcasting MTSU games, local sports were not their forte. (That's primarily the domain of 104.5 FM and 560 AM, who cover the Sounds.) Still want your Mike & Mike fix? Then it's time to pony up for the Sirius.

Anyone can stream Mike & Mike for free on the web. You can even watch the webcam for free.

Cowherd is terrible ... at least I won't have to listen to his annoying rants again. His propensity to use everyday-life encounters as metaphors for sports just killed me.

Cumulus took ESPN Radio from WNSR. Now might be a good time to renegotiate.

I actually love listening to Cowherd. Along with Dan Patrick on 104.5, he is my favorite. He has original, intelligent takes on sport related issues. Mike and Mike, on the other hand, I find terribly boring. They tend to not want to offend anybody, which leads to boring radio. But that's just me. You can also still catch Cowherd or any of the other ones such as Van Pelt on streaming radio on the ESPN website.

I love listening to Cowherd. His metaphors are intelligent, no-nonsense, and very appropriate. Cumulus has forced at least one more listener to resubscribe to satellite radio.

I'll miss Mike and Mike, Cowherd and Dan Patrick. Can't believe they're switching to some digital Ipod playlist, cheap bastards. Also goes to show that Nashville just isn't a big league sports town.

I think they just had a really hard time generating advertising for that format, Kevin, for whatever reason. I was only an occasionally listener, but I often noticed how their only advertising seemed to be those state public service announcements about drunk driving. They'd pile 'em up one after another during breaks, sometimes even repeating the same ad. Plus it's probably pretty hard to draw ratings with only two pro sports teams in town -- especially since one of them doesn't have the biggest following.

The nationally syndicated programming on 106.7 was much better that the equivalent on 104.5 (Rome is boring, JT Brick, etc.). I wonder if The Zone is interested in switching their affiliation?

Rome is boring? Cowherd is intelligent?
What's wrong with you people?!

I think the popularity of George Plaster's show and 104.5 The Zone's morning show is really what killed the station off.
Tom Abraham - who was terrible, by the way – couldn't compete. Nor could the crap that replaced him.
Plaster simply owns sports talk in this city.

I don´t think Rome is boring and I think 104.5 has other good shows also, especially Dan Patrick. I´ve never really understood the popularity of Plaster and his aw shucks persona. But Cowherd´s show is very intelligent, especially when compared to the local guys in this market. He analyzes trends far better than anyone else out there. He makes points that make a lot of sense that I had not thought about before. He pisses some people off because he comes across as smug, like Rome, and is opinionated. He also disses sports like hockey, golf and baseball constantly, which partly explains why some people don´t like him. Mike and Mike, who try hard to not ruffle feathers, would never do this.

I think it is terrible that they stopped broadcasting espn the zone..Nashville never gives the people here enough options to choose from. The people that are in power here in Nashville always want to keep things local and they force the local people to only think about Nashville....Broaden up your view Nashville & accept growth.. Grow up Nashville

Hopefully some station will pick up the ESPN radio format. I already miss it, especially Mike & Mike. Even Cowherd, who is just a troll that tries to mess with people, is better than Rome and his Clones.
I prefer the local guys, but sometimes even they get tiresome and I need a break. This just means I flip to NPR during 104.5 commercials.

"Plaster simply owns sports talk in this city"?
Good grief!
For sports talk in this city, it's his colleagues in the morning -- Frank, Kevin and Mark.
George Plaster, God bless him, is a snooze-fest.

I miss EsPN, but also noticed the paucity of ad variety. Rather than sattelite radio, check out iheart radio or yahoo radio if you have an iPhone.it's Free. Espn affiliates available from Detroit and Baltimor, plus many other great music and talk stations.
I love Cowherd, and Jim Rome. I've been listening to Rome since the Mid 90's. The only time he loses me is interviews with basketball coaches and jockeys. Zzzzz.
The clones are a scream, and I love Jim's sense of humor.
I've listened to Dan Patrick since he was a rock jock as Dan Pugh in Dayton, OH, and God Bless him he's a pro, but bores me at this point. When he had Rob Dibble and Phil The Showkiller("yes, Mr. Patrick, sorry Mr. Patrick. Uh...yes, I think I accidentally hung up on the President, Mr. Patrick.") the show was much more entertaining. Now I find him slobbering over Jessica Alba and the like as a 55 year old man to be a little creepy. The schtick is stale, despite the great interviews he pulls. Cowherd Is fresh and entertaining, and "Romey, you Rock!" Plaster, not so
Much...kudos though for bringing John McClain of the Houston Chronicle to Nashville Radio. Fun and opinionated NFL talk.
