Claiming victimhood in a sex-and-blackmail scandal, state Sen. Paul Stanley is expected to resign today as Commerce Committee chairman. Stanley isn't talking but his accused blackmailer is. Joel Palmer Watts calls it "a tragic misunderstanding" and says:
"There is nothing more that I wanted to do than to expose this person for what he was."
TBI flack Kristin Helm says of the senator: "When he came to us, he was very much in need of our help. He felt as though he could be publicly humiliated. He knew that he was being extorted for an extraordinary amount of money." In other Republican sex scandal news, Democratic Party chair Chip Forrester wonders why Zach Wamp took $5,000 from Nevada Sen. John Ensign: "It would seem to me that, if you were running for governor, and you were running on a set of moral values that Zach Wamp seems to talk about a lot, you'd be sort of reluctant to receive financial support from an admitted adulterer." The Metro Council fills a school board vacancy. ... Bredesen: States leery of health-care proposals. ... The White House goes country. ... After 28 years on death row, a killer's execution date is set. ... Legislators attended 59 parties this session. ... Burchett socks away $70K for his mayor's campaign. ... Blackburn's opponent looks for help. ... Ramsey drops in on a fundraiser for Bart Gordon's opponent:
"We can see Washington headed in the wrong direction more than we've ever seen it, at least in my life," said Ramsey. "They keep saying there's going to be a change. When Obama gets through, all we're going to have is change -- the change in our pockets."
The Shelby County election commission chairman calls optical scan voting "insanity." ...But the Commercial Appeal calls for Secretary of State Tre Hargett to implement the Voter Confidence Act:
Republican, Democratic and independent voters alike, we believe, would be well-served by an expeditious transition to optical scan voting systems. That's not likely to happen. The conventional wisdom is that -- unless Hargett is successfully challenged in court -- the delay will be granted when the General Assembly convenes in January. It seems like an inauspicious debut for Tennessee's new secretary of state, but if there is an equipment problem in one of Tennessee's elections next year at least we'll know who to call.

"There is nothing more that I wanted to do than to expose this person for what he was."
Misunderstanding? I suppose he could have sold the photos to a newspaper, but then he didn't stand to recognize an immediate gain of $10,000.
No swans in this sewer.
