The environmental lobby has long hoped to persuade Lamar Alexander to vote for climate change legislation. Guess they don't know our senator that well. He likes to hike and occasionally sticks up for the great outdoors, but only if it's OK with his big business buddies. The Huffington Post, which is keeping track, now has removed the senator from its list of fence-sitters and into the "nay" column because of his recent comments at the National Press Club:
"Our country is at a critical point in its economic and energy history. Today's recession is the most severe in decades. . ... There's the unfinished job of cleaning the air and for many the global warming of our planet has become an urgent concern.

"So it is against this backdrop that for the first time ever legislation dealing broadly with energy and climate change is coming out of the House of Representatives. The Senate's also moving ahead on both issues and the decision Congress makes will affect our well-being for years to come. The House of Representatives has chosen the high-cost solution to clean energy and climate change. Its economy-wide cap and trade and renewable energy mandate is a job-killing, $100 billion/year national energy tax that will add a new utility bill to every American family's budget."

Support for cap-and-trade is evaporating. Daily I read editorials, comments and letters-to-the-editor from all over the nation. Whereas two weeks ago it was maybe 2-to-1 against cap and trade, opinion now seems to be at least 6-to-1 against. The Senate will be wise to heed the overwhelming lack of public support and stop this disastrous legislation from passing into law.
If instead of cap-and-trade the United States had a national mandate to replace coal generation plants with natural gas and nuclear energy, plus if we replaced our commuter cars with battery-powered electric cars, we would drastically reduce our dependence on foreign oil and reduce CO2 emissions faster and beyond the proposed cap and trade targets.
