War reporter and former Scene writer P.J. Tobia filed this report from his Afghan Desk on trueslant.com: While thousands of Marines patrol Helmand, Taliban insurgents seem to be capitalizing on the relative weakness of a remote outpost in the Paktika Province.

"The fact that the insurgents can launch complex, sophisticated attacks such as this one, in a relatively quiet area speaks volumes about the nimble posture of the Taliban and other insurgent groups. The fact that the US repelled the assault shows that even when caught by surprise, coalition forces are never that far from battle ready," Tobia writes.

How to win the war in Afghanistan.
1) Stop political interference in how the war is fought. No 'directing' the war from Washington.
2) Complete the Iraq draw-down ASAP and transfer the troops to Afghanistan.
3) Take ground, hold it, clear it. Rinse, repeat.
4) If the Taliban use hit and run tactics - follow them, hunt them down and kill them. Don't run away.
5) Arty, arty & more arty. Its killed more soldiers than any weapon in the history of warfare. Its cheap & effective. Use it.
6) Stop worrying so much about collateral damage. Its war, not recess.
7) Tell Pakistan to go fuck themselves and move a couple divisions to their side of the border to keep the Taliban from running.
8) Cut the Taliban's primary funding source: destroy the poppy crops.
9) If all else fails - glass the entire country. Problem solved.
