The death of one of Nashville's sports heroes has marred Fourth of July festivities across the city. Steve McNair, the quarterback who led the Tennessee Titans to one of the most dramatic finishes in Super Bowl history, was found shot and killed earlier today in an apartment complex at Second Avenue and Lea. He was 36. A woman was also found dead at the scene, but her identity had not been disclosed as of 4 p.m. Saturday. In a press conference, Metro Nashville Police Department spokesman Don Aaron said that police had made a tentative identification and were notifying her next of kin. McNair spent 13 seasons in the NFL, 11 of them with the Titans. In recent weeks, he had made headlines with the opening of his new restaurant, Steve McNair's Gridiron9, on Jefferson Street near TSU. As news spread along the riverfront, news crews were seen rapidly moving from the Riverfront Park festivities up Second Avenue, where a crowd was already gathering near the crime scene. More to come. Oh well, Tennessee is a moving to a society where people will be toting their guns to eat out, sit at a bar, clean their shotguns at public parks. Moms will let their babys play with her handgun while strolling through the grocery (and I am not being funny because Tennessee breeds some of the most ignorant, stupid and poorly educated people on planet earth). So stories like this will not be stories but just another typical life experience. But then I wish I could say that the world would not be better off with fewer Tennesseans, because actually it would be much better off.

MDS:
How rude and unfeeling, it is all about your opinion, your political agenda, and not a word about McNair, his wife nor children.
McNair did a lot of good for the community. Prayers for McNair and his family.
Wow, this did not happen in a restaurant, bar, grocery nor park.
You must be talking about the people who go to Vanderbilt.
Imagine if no person were permitted to carry a gun but the GOVERNMENT!!
Your "opinion" of Tennesseans...... right back at you!

why did he have a house and apartment? I can understand the apartment if he has football practice or something at the stadium, but he retired last year? was this his mistress? did the wife know about the apartment or his friendship with the waitress? I respect Steve big time and my heart goes out to his family.

Hey Scar,
I feel big time, like your all a bunch of inbred white trash that who are products of the worst school system in the western world. Your all dumber than dirt and what if no one but government carried guns? Then even government would not have to. You idiot, Tennessee is at the top percentile of deaths by firearms in the U.S. the states that have strict gun control laws are at the bottom. But just keep blowing each others brains out because like I said, outside of the confederacy nobody really cares anyway.

Maybe God took him and her out because they were committing adultery and well you know what the bible says about that. Maybe God has decided that guns do a better job than stoning or killing first born children. Maybe you can ask one of your "preachers" when your at church on Sunday. You good people of Tennessee are doing a fine job of upholding Gods word. Keep up the good work and enjoy your road kill meal after Church tomorrow!

I cant believe the hate posted here. Please first remember there are very few born and raised "Tennesseans" here. So dear mds, don't stereotype us. We also are not a perfect state, nor is any "confederacy"... We're all equal in every sense of the word. We all have issues and I'd personally not like to "cast the first stone" because nobody knows what God is thinking and nobody lives in anyone else's shoes. These posts are the type of intolerance and hate that build on insanity and rampant malcontents in society and are more dangerous than guns or bad legislation. We need to make positive changes, yes indeed, but this rhetoric is not the answer. Sorry you feel the need to trash others and post such negative words. Possibly you need to look at yourself and see what you can do to help the system not just throw stones. I hope you can learn respect for ALL and maybe you can drop the need to demean others. Promoting division does not solve anything. I must say you DON'T sound like a Tennessean, THANK GOD!!! and if you are, maybe you're one Tennessean that WE would be better off without... As the bigger person, I wish you well and hope and pray you can find your heart. Sincere sympathy for Steve McNair's lovely wife, children, family, friends, fans and GREAT TENNESSEANS who had such an effect on him that he returned to be back here with us... We are honored and proud to have this family and all that they have given back to this GREAT COMMUNITY... Our lives end with not a snapshot but slideshows of our lives. Steve McNair, Thanks for the memories... We will remember you and love you always...

More shocking than the story are the comments. I have visited Nashville, my parents have retired there. My brother and sister now live there. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. God doesn't kill people. God gave us life and free will to live. If there were no guns, people would find new ways to kill each other, simple as that. There is knives, poison, etc. If someone wants you dead bad enough they will find a way. It is also said that more the half of the guns in the hands of civilians have been obtained illegally anyway. One of the many things (drugs and illegal downloads), that our goverment fails to police. If McNair committed adultry it is his business and for his own reasons. I feel badly for McNair this man, whom God made in his own image, a father, husband and son. Whom won't get an opportunity to make amends for his decisions. But mankind, is a violent race. Haven't we exterminated, butchered and raped our own mankind for centuries. Haven't we justified this for the means morality and religion. My prayers go out to McNair, his family, the family of the young lady and everyone on this board. You all need it.

mds:
The so called "tolerance" and "inclusiveness" stops the moment a person expresses free thought that steps out of line with the beliefs of rigid, lock step left of left Marxist neo liberals and their thinly veiled manifesto.
"Government with no guns," it is you who is in need of an education. As soon as a society has anything more valuable than caves and goats, weapons are necessary for protection. When people decide to form a social compact they decide the rules under which they agree in regard to governance. We live in a republic, not a dictatorship, no Marxist planner here murdering 100's of millions of people who can not defend themselves. No guns, no protection from those who seek absolute power, no protection from tyranny. A country with no protection would be taken over rather quickly.
Now, aside from a lollipop government what other sort of fantasies do you have little rude troll: chocolate streets, candy cane street lights, ice cream houses; lol

1mm1029, leave it to someone who are incapable of thinking for themselves to enact the "God" thing. I don't think there is any "God" who has anything to do with the state that Tennessee finds itself in. And shove the "throwing stones" and other biblical crap, its an OCD disorder that I don't suffer from so it only reinforces how ignorant you all are.
Uncle B. Oh Jesus, another "Guns don't kill people people kill people" are southerners capable of any original thought or do always rely on words that are were coined to manipulate and control your weak minds to begin with.
Scar, or Archie Bunker, do you always throw in some "communist bullshit" to make your point? The nations with the strongest gun control laws have the fewest deaths by them.
Your an idiot who may be able to manipulate the weak minds of the average, uneducated Tennessean by keeping them focused on countries like "Iran or defunct Russia". But lets not speak of countries where people are actually much freer such as Canada, most of Europe. Again, leave it to some simpleton to think that by inserting the term "Marxist" that they are some sort of intelligent, well informed soul. Not.
Anonymous- and when one is incapable of a sane rebuttal one pulls out the "just don't listen card". Isn't that why your all a bunch of idiots to begin with? But its good to know that at least one southerner is hooked on phonics, but it does not hide the fact that your probably some trailer park redneck whose mother was also your cousin.
Cheers!

Hmmmm where does on begin here. I see that mds is using stereotypes, though many may be seated in some truth, as a way picking at people. I have a feeling he/she is probably enjoying himself.
But lets keep those things which are facts, facts. They are easily researched.
Fact- Those places, nations, states etc that have strict gun control laws do enjoy the fewest deaths from gun related violence.
Fact- The states with the most violent crime period are those states whose children have the lowest test scores and lowest rated educational systems. Tennessee does qualify for here.
This is a matter of opinion when it comes to whether or not Canada and Europe enjoy more freedom than the United States. Canada enjoys having a document called the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Even LGBT citizens enjoy complete equal rights without being subject to oppression by the government or religion. The U.S. while it varies from state to state the degree basically codifies discrimination into law. Most European countries do the same with the exception of marriage and those that do not have gay marriage have civil unions which offer equal protection of LGBT's. Tennessee codifies bigotry into its state constitution.
Europe and Canada enjoy educational systems that are far superior to the best of the United States school systems. Test scores prove it. This matter was even brought up during the most recent presidential debates.
Canada and Europe provide health care for all its citizens and statistically enjoy a healthier population.
As far as the Queen goes, anyone who knows her role in British or Canadian politics know that she is a figurehead and a tourist attraction. She has little say in the running of government and even if she did is known to be quite progressive in her thinking. And if you want to get into the Canadian economy verses the U.S. the Canadian banking system has been hailed one of the best in the world. The U.S. has shown itself to be a disaster and there are a lot of broke Americans to prove it. And if we want to get into Socialism the U.S. has flooded its banking system with gov. dollars which was started by the Bush regime and continues with the Obama administration.
So if you think America is more seems to be a quite bankrupt society both financially, spiritually and morally.free so be it. But the U.S. government knows every move you make, has been spying on you illegally and now legally for years. Innocent military personnel have been sent off to a war based on a life while in the mean countries that do have and have been known to have weapons of mass destruction flourish. If America is more free then help me out here because it

In overall freedom ranking Tennessee is #7 and New York is #50. Look for yourself. The states with the most gun control (and other restrictions on freedom) rate at the bottom.
New York
is by far the least free state in the Union
(#50 economic, #48 personal). One of us lives in
New York and can attest to the fact that few New
Yorkers would be surprised by such a finding. Sadly,
equally few New Yorkers seem to believe that anything
can be done about the situation. New York has
the highest taxes in the country. Property, selective
sales, individual income, and corporate income
taxes are particularly high. Spending on social services
and “other” is well above national norms. Only
Massachusetts has more government debt as a percentage
of the economy. Government employment
is higher than average. On personal freedoms, gun
laws are extremely restrictive, but marijuana laws
are better than average (while tobacco laws are
extremely strict). Motorists are highly regulated,
but several kinds of gambling are allowed statewide
(not casinos, except on reservations). Home school
regulations are burdensome, but asset forfeiture
has been reformed. Along with Vermont, New York
has the strictest health insurance community rating
regulations. Mandated coverages are also very high.
Eminent domain is totally unreformed. Perversely,
the state strictly limits what grassroots PACs may give to candidates and parties, but not what corporations
and unions may give.
Tennessee
(#8 economic, #18 personal, #7 overall)
is, along with Virginia, one of the freest states in the
South. By one of our measures, Tennessee’s overall
tax burden is the lowest in the country (6.8% of
corrected GSP). The government debt ratio is also
extremely low. Along with West Virginia, Tennessee
also has the best gun control laws in the South.
However, taxes on alcohol—particularly wine—are
quite high. The first offense of marijuana possession
is always a misdemeanor, but otherwise the state has
fairly harsh marijuana laws. The state is one of three
not to require auto liability insurance (permitting
self-insurance instead), but it has sobriety checkpoints,
primary seat-belt enforcement, and helmet
laws for motor- and bicyclists. Gambling is highly
controlled; Tennessee is one of just three states to
prohibit even charitable gaming. The state also falls
somewhat short on education, with mandatory kindergarten,
mandatory registration of private schools,
and burdensome notification requirements for home
schoolers. Labor laws are above average, but health
insurance laws are mediocre. Occupational licensing
has gone way too far. Eminent domain has not really
been reformed. The state has low cigarette taxes and
no smoking bans on private property.

Really, possibly the most useless gun control debate of the many on Pith.
Gun permit battles don't do much except to give the NRA another issue. For example, try to fit the unreported fact that Steve McNair had a concealed weapon permit to the circumstances of his death.
That's right, McNair had a permit. (I haven't seen anyone report that fact.) Did that do anything to save him? Did it do anything to cause his, or anyone else's, death?

Most of TN's gun deaths occur in Memphis by criminals without permits. It appears you employ the logic of an 8 year old.
McNair's death was senseless and tragic and the fact that you use this story as a springboard for your degenerate political agenda shows you are absolute scum.

Jack, your so politically correct and keep sucking on those right wing, red neck, *ocks cause look how much progress your making doing so. Haven't you learned that you live in a state where discussion is impossible by now? Tennessee is a socially regressive state, not progressive. One of the worst educated populations in the western world and at the very bottom of the human rights scale. A state that legalizes road kill to be used as food. A state that treats the only public figure it has to be proud of like dirt, Al Gore. When dealing with the sane and intelligent manners and decorum work. But when your dealing with a bunch of Nazi's you have to remind them as much as possible of who and what they really are, otherwise their grandiosity will take hold and inflate their sick ego's. The constant reminder works to the whole gene pool in line. I really think that places like Tn. have ignorance encoded in their DNA and are hopeless without genetic engineering.

I have loads of friends who were born in Tennessee. Most of them left after college and seldom return. Your state is the laughing stock of the world.
