The death of one of Nashville's sports heroes has marred Fourth of July festivities across the city. Steve McNair, the quarterback who led the Tennessee Titans to one of the most dramatic finishes in Super Bowl history, was found shot and killed earlier today in an apartment complex at Second Avenue and Lea. He was 36.
A woman was also found dead at the scene, but her identity had not been disclosed as of 4 p.m. Saturday. In a press conference, Metro Nashville Police Department spokesman Don Aaron said that police had made a tentative identification and were notifying her next of kin.
McNair spent 13 seasons in the NFL, 11 of them with the Titans. In recent weeks, he had made headlines with the opening of his new restaurant, Steve McNair's Gridiron9
, on Jefferson Street near TSU.
As news spread along the riverfront, news crews were seen rapidly moving from the Riverfront Park festivities up Second Avenue, where a crowd was already gathering near the crime scene. More to come.
