Robin Smith went trudging around southeast Tennessee yesterday to announce her congressional candidacy and--surprise of all surprises!--somebody asked her about all that baggage she was lugging along behind her. Bill Poovey of the Associated Press had the audacity to bring up the infamous news release she sent as state GOP chair that used Barack Obama's middle name, "Hussein," and showed him in traditional African clothing. Smith bristled, calling the question "unprofessional" and said it was "liberal media" trying to embarrass her. "This is not what this (congressional campaign) is going to be about," she said. Really? Somehow, Pith suspects Paula Flowers, the only Democrat in the race so far, is going to make a really big deal about that press release before this campaign is over. Update: H/t to Kleinheider for discovering that Vanity Fair has discovered our charming Mrs. Smith. She's crazy, Vanity Fair points out: "In one Facebook status update, for instance, she tells 'Judeo-Christians' to 'wake up' and oppose President Obama's attempts to reach out to the Muslim world." Update II: Smith responds to critics who say she was mean to House Speaker Kent Williams:
"If people call it heavy-handed to look a liar in the eye and say we don't want you in a public policy situation representing our party, maybe that's heavy-handed. But this is a man that met for months with Democrats and concocted a deal to get the votes of 49 Democrats and cast his own Republican vote to upset the caucus nominees.''
