Who Would Win in a Ty Cobb-Off?

Posted by Betsy Phillips on Wed, Jul 1, 2009 at 5:18 PM

Kleinheider is reporting that Tom Humphrey is reporting that Rep. Curt Cobb's brother, Ty Cobb, will run for his newly vacated seat.

If he were to win, we'd have two Ty Cobbs in the Legislature.

Which begs the question--could we mandate that every time they disagree, they settle it through a wrestling match?  Or maybe a pie eating contest?  Or both, you know, if we're feeling flexible?

No, actually, it begs the question, how do our Ty Cobbs stack up to the original?

Original Ty Cobb

  • The Original Ty Cobb
--Legendary Athlete
--Kind of an asshole
--Kind of racist
--Pro-union (helped start the player's union)
--Pro-marriage (liked it so much he did it twice)
--Got in a fist fight with an umpire
--Didn't wear a number
--Pretty hot
--Southern

Current Ty Cobb

  • The Ty Cobb We Have Now, District 64
--Not legendary...yet
--Seems like a nice guy
--Not racist, that I've heard
--Pro-union (as Mike Turner will make sure you know)
--Not yet married (much to the relief of some local bloggers)
--Looks like he could throw a punch if he had to, but has yet to pick a fist fight with anyone on the Hill.
--Has a number: District 64
--Not my type, but I've seen folks reduced to giggles
--Southern

Proposed Ty Cobb
Hard saying.  Here's what we do know.  District 62 is pretty conservative, Mike Turner likes

him, and he's planning on running for his brother's seat.

We don't know much about his positions on things or whether he can hit a baseball. Will he chart his own path or just follow in his brother's footsteps?

I couldn't even find a picture of him online, so I've done a recreation of what this Ty Cobb might look like, combining what we know of his genetic make-up with my artistic skills.

Original Ty Cobb: pretty well admitted, after his career was over, to throwing games for money. Is either of the TN Ty Cobbs a crook and a disgrace to his profession? Because, if so, there's your winner.

The new Ty Cobb was an outstanding basball player and played in college.

I'm aware of the allegations of Cobb and game-fixing, but as I understand it, it was never proven. What your source, nm, that Cobb admitted it?

Ouch, that's good to know and bodes well for my efforts to continue to make Ty Cobb comparisons.

Marvin, he kinda sorta said so in his autobiography, didn't he? Hedged around with some nudges and winks.

GoldnI, it was for the benefit of those mysterious local bloggers that I suggested Ty Cobb wrestling matches.

Some years ago I read a Cobb biography, but haven't read his autobiography. I could find no reference to an admission on the Internets, but that's not conclusive, of course. Perhaps some genuine Cobb-ophile out there will weigh in.
I remember (if I'm recalling correctly) from the bio the story of how his father died when Ty was still young. His father was trying to sneak into the house on the second story, his mother thought he was a prowler and shot him dead.

Marvin, you now have me wondering myself. I'll have to see whether the Nashville library owns a copy of that autobiography (I don't myself) and check to be sure that's where I read it.
He certainly was, um, colorful, in any case.
