Whopper of the Month: Who's the Best Liar in the Land?

It's time once again to elect the lucky winner of our celebrated "Whopper of the Month" award. And this month as the legislature careened to the end of its fabulous 2009 session, the bald-faced falsehoods were flowing like raw sewage into the Cumberland. So as you might imagine, the competition is brutal once again. Newcomers like Joe McCord are staking their claim to the top prize with some disgustingly putrid bullshit. But don't count out veteran liars like Jason Mumpower and Doug Jackson. Those razor-tongued operators haven't dominated this competition for years without learning a thing or two about how to tell a whopper. Also this year for the first time, a written communication earns a nomination. It's Sen. Diane Black's reprimand of Sherri Goforth! Can Black ride her new international notoriety to the top of the heap of this month's worst liars? We report. You decide. "It's not a crippling blow." Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, denying his campaign for governor has been sunk by the failure of legislation to let him raise campaign cash next session. "Nobody has said anything to me about it. No donors, no supporters, nobody. It's the first I've heard of it." Ward Cammack denying that his membership in the Belle Meade Country Club has ever been mentioned as a problem by any potential contributors to his campaign for governor. "Tennessee Democratic Party: Respect. Empower. Include." The party's new slogan. "I am personally a fan of promoting Tennessee because Tennessee is the best place to live and work and raise a family." Kim McMillan, candidate for governor. "Sherri Goforth is not Chip Saltsman. She is not Bill Hobbs. She is not Robin Smith. She ain't even Scott Gilmer. She's not a player in game. In my mind, it would be akin to an infantryman shooting a enemy army cook in the back of the head. I had the ammo, I took aim, but I viewed my potential victim as a civilian and I held my fire. That's what happened." Uber blogger Adam Kleinheider, trying to explain why he ignored the Sherri Goforth story. "10th ammdt has been run over long enough. States should not be pawns of fed govt. Tennessee priorities unique. State sovereignty important!" Zach Wamp in a tweet. "We can be proud of the priorities we set." Jason Mumpower on the 2009 legislative session. "I think we did a pretty good job actually to make sure we got a budget that's good for the people of Tennessee." Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey "Gary was very instrumental in what we did. He's our leader and he's a good man." House Democratic caucus chair Mike Turner, praising House Democratic leader Gary Odom when asked why he was ignoring Odom at a celebratory press conference. "We're ready for the throwdown, and I'm ready to take Jason Mumpower on." Democratic Party chair Chip Forrester pretending to be macho. "The press has portrayed this as guns in bars, guns in bars, guns in bars." Sen. Doug Jackson, lashing out at the media for reporting on his guns-in-bars bill.. "As it stands now, the bad guys, the criminals are bringing guns into restaurants and killing people. They're doing it on a regular basis. They're doing it to the point that the state of Tennessee is one of the unsafest states in the nation. I'm a firm believer that an armed citizen is a safe citizen." House GOP caucus chair Glen Casada. "I do not think this is an effort to destroy our environment." Rep. Joe McCord during the debate over one of his many bills to destroy our environment. Dear Sherri, This is a follow up to confirm our conversation regarding the state email policy. First, as we discussed, email communications are for state use only and should not be used for purposes outside of the guidelines established. Also, as we discussed, no communication that is derogatory regarding any minority should be sent from this office or that employee will be subject to termination of employment with my office. I know you take this policy seriously and I am confident that you will abide by the policy. Your service to my office and the legislature has been commendable with the exception of this incident and I look forward to working together in the future within these guidelines. Sincerely, Diane Black

Not to nitpick, but how much of this is lying?
Casada, sure. Ramsey about the budget maybe. Everything is disingenious, a matter of opinion, or a case of he-said, she-said.

Lt Ramsey wins this hands down. Technically, he might be correct. His denial was not "It's not a fatal blow" which it is unless he rams it through in January which will kill his quest.
When are your Annual Legislative Hypocrite of the Year Award nominations due in?
I nominate Ramsey for past support and sponsorship of ethics bills to ban legislators from raising money for a governor's race during session. Ramsey first voted for a bill he sponsored putting the ban in place in 1993 during his first year in office. He now finds the Ramsey Ban unfair when it applies to him. Sixteen years of pretense of ethics dumped into the Cumberland Punchbowl.
Top that.

Jeff Woods is in no position to call anyone a liar. He made up a bunch of crap about TFA and when John Harris personally called him on it...he ran and hid.
He is a coward AND a liar.

I would nominate the recently TNGA confirmed Tennessee Regulatory Authority Director Kenneth C. Hill who has stated under penalty of federal law on his broadcast ownwership records for WPWT 870 AM filed with the Federal Communications Commission that he is an "American Indian/Alaskan Native".
Unfortunately for TRA Director Hill (starting July 1, 2009) his Tennessee voter registration application card filed in 1982 by Hill states that he is in fact white.
A Special Authority Conference is scheduled for Wednesday July 1, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. in the Hearing Room on the Ground Floor of the Tennessee Regulatory Authority at 640 James Robertson Parkway in Nashville, Tennessee for the purpose of electing a Chairman --- this meeting would also be a good time to interview Kenneth Hill and ask him about what "American Indian/Alaskan Native" tribe that he supposedly belongs...
