What was interesting is that Dobbs seemed neither right nor left. His palpable fear of Latinos made him appear conservative. His constant drumbeat about lost jobs could have gotten him elected shop steward with the Longshoremen. This was, in many ways, purely nationalist TV, an us-against-them show featuring Lou as plastic-haired protector of the heartland.
But something happened on Lou's way to the top (and Nashville's similar bout with English-Only). Pretty much everyone stopped worrying about the Mexicans. Lou's ratings have fallen a whopping 29 percent from a year ago.
This happens when bigger problems come along -- namely the grand collapse of the economy. But if you look on the brighter side, maybe it's just that hard times make us smarter. We're less easily drawn to the artificial us-against-them, more locked in on the things that truly matter.
At least I'm choosing to see it this way.

He could cast himself as a "birther" so he could start winning the Fox audience that Shep Smith is doing his best to scare away.
americans pretty much stop worrying about mexicans? americans are worrying about everything! thats the biggest issue everything in life in foreign minded goverments best interest minds? we are being hit on all fronts in life today? just what does this goverment doing for U.S. the people? foreign this foreign that? stimulus to create jobs for who? illegal this illegal that? no transparency in our goverment it all? lou reports pretty darn fair on alot of subjects of american interest to U.S.! SPECIALLY THE ONES WE ARE LOSING ON SECURITY OUR SECURITY? PROSPERITY? FUTURE? democraps? republicons? just which ones are different in agenda? point does anything change for the better for U.S.? what? homosexual marriage? billions in illegal invaders aid and social service health care? child abductions up? crime going up? states can't afford cost to keep prisoners behind bars? solution let them murderers and rapist out? yet pork barrel projects priorities? lou don't sit their and promote one party over another like every other news audience does" thats what makes lou number one to me! honest fair independent american ross perot type guy! ross perot nafta will be like giant vacuum taking industry out of america statement look see now live? lou wrote book on it too! yes their is a difference in lou dobbs than say ABC! NBCBS! FOX! INDEPENDENT from both parties. amen.
