People Who Still Believe Obama is a Muslim May Actually Be Cowardly AND Racist

Very interesting study out of Duke: A group of students looked at how best to counter political misinformation, namely rumors that still dog Obama about being a Muslim. This is possibly one of the first studies to examine political misperception, since political science often fails to distinguish between the misinformed and the uninformed.

What they found is interesting, sad and hilarious. What is called "misperception negation"--interviewers informing respondents that Obama is not, in fact, a Muslim--is utterly unsuccessful in convincing those who actually believe he is a Muslim that their beliefs are totally baseless and stupid. (See "White People Scared of Black Presidents.")

And "corrective affirmation"--informing respondents that Obama is a Christian--actually completely backfires, only reinforcing the respondent's belief that he is a Muslim. In what is referred to as cognitive dissonance, researchers believe the two beliefs are so irreconcilable that the respondent reactively grows more entrenched. EXCEPT when a "non-white" interviewer is present, basically suggesting that people who think Obama is a Muslim are afraid to admit it in front of black people. (See Republicans Trying to Look Outwardly Progressive)

"First, despite administering the experiment on computers, the corrective affirmation treatment was only effective at reducing misperceptions in the presence of non-white experimental administrators, suggesting a strong social desirability effect. In addition, three-way interactions between the treatment, race of the administrator and party identification also indicate that these social desirability effects were more prevalent among Republicans..."

So, when asked, some white people will argue with other white people that Obama is a Muslim. But not in front of a non-white interviewer. Is it that these tea-bagging morons know they're wrong at some deep, fundamental level? Or are they just cowardly racists who don't want to look like racists?

"America's first Muslim president?
Obama aligns with the policies of Shariah-adherents"

In the end, it doesn't matter if he prays towards Mecca five times a day. If his policies advance the Iranian or Palestinian agendas then he could be the next best thing.
Sharia won't really impact my demographic so I suppose I shouldn't care if we allow a broken culture to gain ascendancy. I just don't want my great grand children to face the same problems now plaguing Paris.

BRIAN: I'm not the Messiah, honestly!
WOMAN: Only the true Messiah denies his divinity.
BRIAN: Well, what chance does that give me? Alright then, I am the Messiah.
CROWD: He is the Messiah! He is the Messiah!

JL, if you want your comments to be taken seriously, don't include a link of a commentary by Frank Gaffney in the Washington Times. Talk about biased. The Washington Times is Fox News in print, nothing more than right wing tabloid. And if anyone advanced the Iranian agenda, it was Bush, with their total disinclination to see that the war in Iraq only made Iran more powerful and their disinterest in having any kind of meaningful dialogue during the process.

Hey,
I am not saying that Obama is a practicing muslim. I am simply saying that he is pandering to the muslim world.
In addition to this Arab Apology tour, he has posted a pro Sharia fellow to the State Department.

I have no doubt that Osoma is a non-believer. He seems to understand that religion exists as a tool to manipulate the masses.
I simply disagree with his elevation of a disgusting belief system. That is all.

I'm with Kosh.
Hey right wing christian nut jobs, you been worrying about running out of people to hate cause they're different than you, well don't worry, because there are roughly 2.2 billion christians, 1.6 billion muslims, and 900 million non-believers. So lots of people to hate forever. How dare those muslims have their own jesus. Also god squad, don't let the fact that muslims and non believers put together out number you get you down, your just crazy enough to ruin the whole planet for everyone.
Amen.
