Gun Freaks Surrender to Common Sense, Agree to Leave Our Children Alone

Gun advocates in the legislature say they've cut a deal with the governor to avoid another veto of any of their fabulous bills. The upshot: Guns will remain banned in city parks and playgrounds. Our children can climb on the monkey bars in peace! In return, the legislature will bar local governments from using beer permit ordinances to outlaw guns in bars, and the governor won't put up anymore fuss over any of this. "We're taking out the local parks in return for the governor's commitment not to veto anymore gun bills," Rep. Frank Niceley told reporters a few minutes ago, then went on a rant about how difficult it was for him to compromise his Second Amendment principles. "I don't want to create a safe haven for a wacko to kill my children. It was hard." The guns-in-parks bill has passed both houses, but the governor was threatening to veto it. Now, it'll be recalled, fixed and sent back to the governor. Another gun bill will be amended to stop any possibility that local governments could prohibit guns in bars, according to Niceley.

So why have they created a safe haven for whackos in the legislative plaza. If you can carry a gun into a park, restaurant or playground, why not into the legislature? We all know why!

Sorry Mr. Niceley, I submit you have it backwards-- when citizens with CCW permits are prohibited from carrying in city parks, only bad guys/thugs will have guns in the park and can take little Johnny or Sally w/o fear of lethal force used against him, and thus the "feel good gun free zone" is more dangerous than before.
A bit cliche here; there have been very few attacks on police stations in the Sates - yes, they have guns there.

Hmm. What about my kids? Should I not plan to protect them while in they are playing in parks? And how would my being armed prevent them from playing on the monkey bars in peace? If anything, since criminals by definition do not obey the law, you'd think that criminals would currently already be carrying in parks, confident that none of the law-abiding straights, even the carry permit holders, are armed. Sounds dangerous.
Also, if the new definition for carry permit holders is "wackos", then why do they commit less crime as a group than the police? Why aren't the police prohibited from carrying in parks? Prohibiting HCP holder in parks doesn't seem to make sense when you look at the facts.
Oh wait, this is one of those satire columns, like in the Onion, right? Hah! I forgot, just look for the "Jeff Woods" byline, that's the tipoff that's it a parody article. Hilarious, good work.

Thank heavens! No guns in parks! I'm sure that crazy guy that WAS planning on shooting random folks in the park will now happily find some place that DOES allow guns. Whew! Close one! Seriously, folks, if someone is intent on committing murder, he won't be deterred by a gun law. The only unarmed gun-owners in the parks will be those law-abiding citizens that don't want trouble and only carry in order to protect themselves and their loved ones. Myself, if someone starts shooting up a park, I plan to kick sand in his face or possibly pick him last for kickball. That'll show him.

sueyyyyy,
Here in Washington State we can in fact carry into the Capitol building, and guess what--that's right, it's never been a problem.

Yeah,
The kids will remain safe since gun free zones have worked so well in the past. Just ask Everyone at Virginia Tech!
Gun free zones are like gay free zones in the Catholic Church. They tend to have the opposite effect!

Now the friendly parks in town and the patrons frequently going to them will belong to the gangs and other criminal elements since the potential for resistance has been outlawed.
The worst part of this is that Jeff Woods thinks that this is a smart move.

WOO HOO! This could be labeled the "child molester protection act". So if mama sees someone diddlying her kid, she can run and get the phone and call 911 and wait. And wait. And wait. Course if she protects her kid in a park, SHE will get arrested for ILLEGALLY shooting what she thought was a child molester. KEWL! I guess the FORCE FIELD generated by that "no guns in parks" sign will keep them safe.

I sure am glad we passed laws against illegal drugs in parks and play grounds.
Didn't work, did it?
It's almost as if bad guys break laws .... do you think that they would commit criminal acts?
You hoplophobes amaze me. You don't trust yourself enough to take responsibility for your, and your kid's, safety. Then you try to impune people like me who take ultimate responsibility for our safety.

Sorry libs, Senator Beavers refused to recall the bill. It takes a message from the Senate to recall the bill as well as the House.

Wrong.
Your children can now play in innocent oblivion, relying on YOUR responsibilty to protect them (HAH!), without any obstacle to violent criminals preying on them and those around them.

"So why have they created a safe haven for whackos in the legislative plaza. If you can carry a gun into a park, restaurant or playground, why not into the legislature? We all know why!"
A decent number of state legislatures have no metal detectors and no law against carrying in the capitol (by licensed concealed carry permit holders). None of these states have had any trouble. The fact is, very few state legislators and only one sitting governor have ever been assassinated in the USA. I guess the politics at the state level just isn't as explosive as politics at the national level. The last act of substantial violence I can remember is a shooting at the Illinois state capital - and they have both metal detectors and laws against concealed carry. A guy rushed the guard with a shotgun and shot him to death. Some good Illinois' laws and metal detectors did that guard.

Good news. I heard this so-called "deal" fell through.
Bill is law. The right to bear arms is further restored.

Let me understand your line of thinking, Mr. Woods. You're worried that there are people who are law-abiding enough to wait until it's legal to carry a gun in a park, but aren't law-abiding enough to refrain from murdering children?
OK, then. I can just picture these lunatic would-be murderers now, snapping their fingers in dismay, 'Foiled by anti-carry laws again! Zoinks!'
