House Democratic caucus chair Mike Turner says Republicans are trying to pull a fast one on charter schools. With Democrats united in their opposition, Rep. Beth Harwell's bill is stuck in the House Education Committee. So on the House floor, Republicans are plotting to amend an education bill by Rep. David Hawk to do what Harwell's bill would have done. Turner is outraged:
"I think they're going to try to run roughshod over us on the bill. Hawk has promised that he had a bill that if he took any amendments on the bill that he would not go forward. He's now handed the bill off to Beth Harwell, which to me is the same as accepting an amendment for it. If that happens, he's lied to us. He made a promise to the committee if any amendments went on that bill he would not accept them. Now he's handed the bill off to Beth Harwell. That is going to cause some problems."
Will Democrats stick together against the bill on the floor? Turner isn't sure.
"We have not changed our caucus position. We've asked everyone to hold our positions on that but I don't know if everybody will or not. If somebody breaks, there won't be any horse heads in the bed in the morning. There won't be anybody kicked out of the party or the caucus. There'll be some teeth gnashing, but there won't be any permanent damage. At the same time, I think our guys are more united than y'all give us credit for, but we'll see."
