Jeff:
Have you heard whether or not Bredesen will veto HB898? This bill would allow off-duty police officers to carry their weapons in establishments that serve alcohol.
Since "guns and alcohol don't mix" and "it's never a good idea to have weapons in a bar fight," I assume the two of you are just as much opposed to this bill as you were to the other one.
Am I wrong?
I am a smoker. I love nothing better than a great glass of wine, a good meal and a smoke. Granted, there are still a few patios and 21 and up establishments that you can still do both -- but I live in bible thumpin', 10 O'clock beddin', freakin' Franklin -- and quite frankly, the food sucks at the 21 and up places (not to mention the choice of wine). So, you can't smoke in a bar but you can bring your gun? Great. I plan on smoking at every bar I go into, regardless of the rules.....and if you don't like, you can just shoot me.
Can Woods or anyone reading this point to where this law is a problem in any other state?
Thanks.
Tygard to withdraw Council guns-in-restaurants bill

At-large Councilman Charlie Tygard will withdraw at the June 16 Council meeting his recently filed bill outlawing guns in Davidson County establishments which serve beer.
Tygard said he consulted the Metro Legal Department, which told him the legislation did not pass the legal litmus test. Tygard said the bill wouldn’t fly because it is pre-empted by state law established in the 1986. The law said local governments could not limit the right to bear arms, unless they already had a law on the books.
