Pastor Maury Davis of the monolithic Madison fortress--Cornerstone (Mega)Church--has just sent us a release on his latest lecture series: Our Civic Duty. You remember Davis, right? He's the guy that caught all sorts of flak for a lecture series entitled Islam: An Evil Religion. What better way to inflame the prejudices of the ill-informed flock than to preach about it? And inflame them some more. Loving your neighbor and that sort of thing. Does Jesus know you're speaking for him, Pastor Davis?
For the month of June he has his cross hairs set on Obama. And gays. And, you guessed it, Muslims. He says Christians haven't involved themselves enough in the political process. Right. So the Moral Majority hasn't been waging a culture war? And installing ninnies in the White House?
White male Paranoia. To wit: "Who would have ever thought that we would live in a place where President George Washington gets one holiday per year, Jesus Christ gets Easter and Christmas, Labor Day gets a day, the veterans of this great country get Memorial Day and Veterans Day, and the gay-lesbian-transgender group of Americans receive, by order of the President, the entire month of June?" asks Maury Davis. "This Administration is leading us down a path of deception by denying our Christian heritage and pushing us toward an acceptance of a misrepresented Muslim faith."

And to those of you who will inevitably complain about the author or the Scene attacking Christians I want to set the record straight. He isn't attacking Christians per se, but demogogue-type fundamentalist Christians. As a Christian, I'm sick and tired of the face of Christianity being people like Davis, Robertson, or Dobson. It's people who focus on gays when it's doubtful that any self-respecting gay person would be caught dead in his church. But there are people struggling from drug and sexual addictions, divorce, adultery, and a host of other problems. And so much time and energy get wasted trying to accomplish goals through political action instead of what they should be doing, which is changing hearts and minds and reaching out to people who are hurting. That's why people like Davis get so upset that Obama is president. He knows his side is losing politically and he's lashing out. But that last statement that I made about losing politically- that's why Christianity is declining. Because too many of it's most vocal people put all of their focus in that, and alienating so many young people in the process.

None other. I pulled the Dallas Morning News clips on the murder.
On January 26, 1975, according to an account of the trial, Jo Ella Liles of Irving, Texas showed 18-year-old Donald Maurice Davis and a friend a house across the street from her that she was renting out. After they stepped inside, Davis pulled a knife, slashed her throat and stabbed her in the side, leaving her to die on the floor of the vacant property. A postman found her that afternoon.
Davis has said many times that he was on drugs at the time of the murder. Yet press coverage of his trial made no mention of drug use. The Morning News reported that Davis' lawyer sought to prove he was insane at the time. It quoted Davis as saying on the witness stand that he couldn't stop himself from killing the woman and did not know why he did it. "He said he believed he may have been possessed by a demon," the newspaper reported.
Convicted of first-degree murder and given a lengthy sentence, Davis served only eight and half years in prison. (There was a nationwide moratorium on the death penalty at the time.) I have been unable to learn anything about the circumstances of his early release.
I saw him on TV once preaching about the time that his very young son came to him crying about some problem he was having. Davis told him to quit his crying and be a man. I consider that incident to be an example of parenting at its worst, but Pastor Davis used it on TV to illustrate some Christian principle. God the father, indeed.
Kevin, what does being left of center on some political issues have anything to do with whether a person is a Christian or not? Come on dude, do you have to be in attack mode at all times. I knew a guy who was extremely conservative and was an atheist. Labels are real convenient Kev but don't always fit. And Christianity is in decline, at least in the U.S. Church attendance is down and the number of people considering themselves non-religious is way up. So Kevin, yes, I am for some limited gun control. I oppose the death penalty. And I am an environmentalist. But I am also a Christian, although not a fundamentalist, literal thinking one.
Let's not forget Europe! No one goes to church there, and their churches are all kinds of awesome. Architectural styles spanning hundreds of years, a relatively liberal attitude (if you're protestant) and, if you're lucky, the churchard will be scattered with the corpses of plague victims and have tremendous, touching monuments to WWI victims. History is fun.
Believe it or not, Kevin, there are a lot of lefty Christians, like the Unitarians, sects of the Lutherans, the Methodists, the Episcopalians, all the church people who came down for the civil rights fight. They're just not that prominent around here.
But I think what Chris is referring to is all the stories lately about declining church membership across the board, even for evangelicals, who have experienced monster growth over the past few decades. I don't know if this accurately speaks to declining Christianity, since it's hard to poll people who think of themselves as Christians but aren't officially members of a parish, but there has been a decided drop in official church membership.
I mean to say they're awesome even if you're not terribly religious. The not terribly religous don't have a lot of reasons to pop in to church in the states.
And just to follow-up Kevin, please enlighten the other readers and show them how my "leftist" comments can be considered unChristian. That is your challenge Kevin. (And try not to make stuff up.)

I am so glad that God can forgive and except us all into his kingdom. I am so glad that God sees all of ours sins the same. A liar is equal to an alcoholic, committing adultery is equal to being abusive, and being gay is equal to being a murderer. I am so glad that God gave us all a sound mind and the good book to learn and drawl our own conclusions of what is right and Holy and of Jesus Christ his son. I am so glad that Our Father God gave us a way to repent for our sins (no matter how big they seem to us God sees them all the same)and turn from our wicked ways and except Jesus Christ as our lord and savor.
I am a Christian will always be a christian and as for me and my house we will praise and serve the Lord for he is good and just to for give us. Everyday we may make a step that is not order of God, but down the road he has made a new path that we may follow. He is always standing there with open arms saying come to me my child, I love you and will keep you safe. All I ask is that you follow me no other man or gods for I am the Way, the Truth and the Light.

But more importantly Pastor Maury Davis, gave his life to the Lord and asked god for forgiveness and when he got saved and started to serve Jesus well that is what its all about. When you ask for forgiveness Jesus forgives and wipes his slate clean. Pastor Davis is the real thing. A real example of God's Redemption at work in a real man, HE has a real past that too many people Want him to relive daily. He is a real Repentent man, a real Right Conservative a real Patriot, with a Heart for Our Troops, A Restored, Delivered, Healed and Forgiven man. Whose accountibility of the past serves to remind him of how far God has brought him. God has made him into a Real Leader, a true man of God. A former real Punk murderer, God has changed him ratically over time by His Word, His Love and His Holy Spirit. Because God IS GOOD, and you too can receive that same Forgiveness and Restoration by Receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.

i have a friend who has just left this church b/c of his most recent comments in sermons as of lately in church in '10 with hateful comments of calling Obama "the devil" and lots of gay bashing. she left the church in tears b/c she was hurt to know why a "preacher of God" would harbor all this hate to his congregation. So, we have a felon that was convicted of slitting a girl's throat and leaving her to die, who only served 8 years for said crime, and now has "turned his life around" dedicating himself to spreading the gospel and in the meantime has also enriched himself at the expense of his flock, at least some of whom are probably only just getting by. My question then becomes, what has he done to atone for his heinous crime? Eight years in the slam sure isn't enough. Has he worked in prisons helping criminals like himself to turn their own lives around? Has he started programs for at-risk youth? Has he contributed significant amounts of his income for such activities? Or, does he just proudly wear diamond rings on his soft fingers, a Rolex on his wrist, and drive his caddy to the private club golf course after church? WWJD

Maury Davis, I hear him ranting on the radio. So he slit an elderly women's throat for no reason and got out of jail in a few years. And he's conservative? Conservative about what, his own execution?

I myself am a member of Cornerstone Church in Madison Tn. Obviously by some of the ignorant statements made I can tell you haven't give this man a chance. I have never heard more of a message ring true than I have at Cornerstone. Our country needs more of our Christian leaders to step up and not bend to the Liberal system at hand. We are a nation conceived from our faith in Christ and biblical truths. Pastor Davis "DOES NOT COMPROMISE THE WORD OF GOD. ". Neither should the body of Christ. I am not tolerate of ignorant individuals with half talk and half measures with no spiritual knowledge and understanding of our history. I believe God's grace is beyond us. you can all just shut your mouths. maury davis has one of the most powerful testimonies of any human being alive today. God delivered him from his wicked ways and has annointed him in his name to save thousands of souls and win them for the Kingdom of God. what we need in America is more people like Pastor Davis and less politically correct pricks that we have in the White House and all over this nation. America was built on Christian principles; Maury Davis is just trying to uphold them.
Wow!! There is much passion displayed in these war of words!!! I lived in Nashville for a brief time and was attending a different church, but heard Maury several times on TV - causing me to be late to my church because I would find myself with pen and paper taking notes. It was refreshing to hear God's word preached in such a real and applicable way. There was a fire lit in my life - a surrendering to God. I did not know Maury or his story; preferred small churches, yet I found myself in the congregation at Cornerstone. God's message was preached!! I will never follow a man!!! I heard TRUTH!! I no longer live in Nashville, but am thankful for the awakening in my spiritual life. Rather Maury is real or not, GOD'S WORD IS!!!! God can use even ex cons. Test what he preaches against the Word of God. He preached TRUTH when I was there - and the truth is that this nation is turning its back on our Creator and falling away from moral values. Our families are being destroyed...and if you check history.....that always leads to the destruction of a nation. PAstor Maury Davis..... I love you Pastor. Best pastor and he preaches the TRUTH... BIBLICAL TRUTH. A lot of you whiners do not want to hear the truth and you are so far from God. Nobody is judging but what Muslims stand behind is a culture of Hate & Evil. being a homosexual, gay or lesbian is totally WRONG. Lenette - Your post from June 20, 2009, says "Why don't you try to be a reflection of Jesus to someone today." That same post says "You are all a bunch of idiots." Do you really think that, by saying that, you are a reflection of Jesus? If that is indeed a reflection of Jesus, then I don't think I want to be a Christian.
Lenette - your most recent comment decries the "culture of Hate and Evil." Calling people "a bunch of idiots" sounds pretty hate-filled to me. It sure doesn't sound like loving the sinner, which all you Cornerstone people claim not to do. I think about the only sinners you love are Maury Davis and the people he approves of.

He talked about taking a toilet brush and knocking out the front teeth of someone who refused to go to a church service at the jail. And the congregation of Cornerstone Church laughed and applauded! The people at Cornerstone Church are so brainwashed, it's scary. Maury Davis could say or do just about anything and he would still have a whole church full of people willing to take a bullet for him.
These comments take what Maury Davis has said totally out of context. If you really want to know the truth about his life, get on his webiste and listen to his sermons for yourself. He is straight forward but also teaches that Jesus life is based on mercy but that we are to speak up for what is wrong---not the people---the wrong. When you know Maury Davis personally, you'll see that he is very loving and merciful, and says you can make choices to give you a good life and it's never too late.
