House GOP caucus chair Glen Casada: "As it stands now, the bad guys, the criminals are bringing guns into restaurants and killing people. They're doing it on a regular basis. They're doing it to the point that the state of Tennessee is one of the unsafest states in the nation. I'm a firm believer that an armed citizen is a safe citizen."
Rep. Jimmy Naifeh, D-Covington: "When there are so many organizations that are opposed to this legislation, it seems that this legislature should listen. We should listen to the police chiefs. We should listen to our local districts attorney generals, our sheriffs, all of our law enforcement. All of these people are opposed to this bill."
House Speaker Kent Williams, R-Elizabethton: "To rehash the same arguments over and over and over, I think is ridiculous. I've heard it all for six months almost. I think it's time to move on with this legislation. You're not going to change anybody's vote, and if you're here to showboat, you're in the wrong place."
More Todd: "I can tell you now that there is a large majority of law enforcement officers in the rank and file who support this bill."
Update: Statement from Bredesen press secretary Lydia Lenker: "Governor Bredesen said last week when he vetoed this bill that he expected an override. He's disappointed with this action but that doesn't change his belief that we can exercise our Second Amendment rights and common sense at the same time. He believes guns and bars simply don't mix, and this legislation doesn't provide the proper safeguards to ensure public safety. Governor Bredesen stands by his decision to veto the bill."Showing 1-11 of 11

Really? Where? Seriously. Where and when have all of these shootings in restaurants that serve alcohol and bars happened? Did I miss them?
I listened to the brief debate on overriding the veto.
I've got a one word description of the speeches made in favor of sustaining the veto...
Lame.
Wow. Some real reporting.
Reported facts? Check
Showed both sides of argument? Check
Didn't include crazy hysterical fantasies? Check
Good job.
Next step on the road to journalism is to see how this affects the 30+ other states that already allow this.
Jimmy Naifeh;"When there are so many organizations that are opposed to this legislation, it seems that this legislature should listen.
The legislature is not there to represent self interest organizations, it's there to represent their constituants!
"We should listen to our local districts attorney generals, our sheriffs, all of our law enforcement. All of these people are opposed to this bill."
ALL of them? Sure Jimmy.
How about listening to your constituants Jimmy? That's what you, and the other ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES, are supposed to do. And it appears that 69 members of the Tennessee House did just that.
This really just shows a difference in political philosophy. Some politicians trust their law-abiding constituents to take care of themselves and others think they or their employees can do a better job. I will say this though. We sure are lucky to have the Nashville Scene to advocate a nanny state on our behalf. Thanks.

ROTFL...give me a fucking break! If that's the case, why did Curry Todd introduce the NRA lobbyists in the House gallery? The only thing missing was the campaign disclosure at the end. If you think he did it "for the people," then you are a damn fool. This entire drama was scripted.
Curry is full of shit. He knew Bredesen wasn't going to sign that bill. Mark Lutrell (Shelby Co. Sheriff and fellow GOP member) has been telling him for years not to pass the bill. Curry also doesn't give a damn about "what the people want." It was never about the people -- it was about the NRA funding his campaign. I could respect him a little more if he'd been honest about it. All of that bullshit he was talking on the House floor was simply for the benefit of the NRA. The TNGOP campaigned on guns, so they had to return the favor. Democrats in "purple" districts voted yes out of the fear of retaliation. Furthermore, the same thing applies to the TN Right to Life for the TNGOP; the Democrats are held hostage to the AFL/CIO and the Trial Lawyers. The longer the cash, the more you can stick it to the Legislature's ass...
By the way, there is a loophole in the gun bill, so those who are anti-gun will still be okay. You can post a "no weapons" sign at your business. So those who feel unsafe with guns can patronize those businesses; those who feel unsafe without guns can go to the others. You still won't be able to smoke at either, though!
And to those who can finally carry their guns into a restaurant, make sure you're quick on your feet! Because if you have a handgun and the criminal has an assault weapon, you may wind up a dead hero!
It's a great day for us insecure, small penis second amend'ers.
Dick,
Seriously? That's the best thing your tiny mind could come up with?
FINALLY something that could be considered journalism by the coward Jeff Woods! I am SO proud of you!!!
Maybe if all your other articles hadn't been so f$cking pathetic and lacking on facts, you could have done something to keep this bill from passing.
Sucks for you. Can I buy you a beer? I won't be having one but I will gladly send one your way...let me know.
:)
" it was about the NRA funding his campaign."
Source please. Also, Chris Cox is a native Tennessean. Yeah, so he advocates the 2nd amendmend for the NRA. So what?

With the antis it's always the "evil" NRA buying off politicians. Nevermind that some elected representatives might actually vote for such a law because it's what their constituants want and/or because it's the right thing to do.
It also says a lot about what the antis think about THEIR reps; that they can be bought off.
