Unless you live in Kalifornistan or Massachusetts (and other localities I cannot name off the top of my head), assault weapons are not illegal. Specifically, they are not illegal anywhere in Tennessee.
The key component of an assault weapon is full automatic or burst fire capability. Weapons which have full automatic/burst capability are illegal in all 50 states.
Just because something looks like a military weapon, doesn't mean it is.
1. It depends on what definition of "assault weapon" you are talking about, Tobin. If you are talking about the "assault weapons" that were banned by the national ban a few years back, and currently banned by a few states' bans now, then you are wrong.
If you are talking about military weapons, then you are right.
Unfortunately, the term "assault weapon" has been hijacked to the point where its definition is always suspect.
2. However, since you clarify that you are referring to fully-automatic weapons, you are still wrong. Automatic firearms are legal in most states (including Tennessee) - the catch is that new automatic weapons cannot be added to the registry of civilian ones. No new manufacture, and no de-mil.
However, if you have the $10,000+ for one, and the additional $400 or so for ATF fees, you are more than welcome to own a fully-automatic rifle or pistol here in Tennessee, along with many other states.
