Hot Air Tour: Turns out to be a very apt name.
The "
free-market grassroots group"
Americans For Properity touched down at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds this morning on a hot-air balloon tour protesting cap-and-trade legislation.
The group's main messages: That cap and trade is nothing more than a tax on energy. And climate change is foolishness.
Now, let's take their claim of grassroots organization. AFP is nothing more than well-financed AstroTurf, plain and simple. Funded by David Koch of multi-national conglomerate Koch Industries and Koch Holdings. Both entities own and are invested in refineries, chemicals, pipelines, you name it. The Koch brand has a nasty environmental record. In 2000, according to the
EPA, Koch Industries paid the largest fine under any environmental law--$30 million--to resolve claims for some 300 oil spills from its pipelines and facilities, some intentional, some unintentional leaks.
Koch Industries actually makes the donations to AFP through the Claude R. Lambe Foundation, which is family-controlled and financed by the company.
