From Corinne Ciocia, communications director for the Center for Nonprofit Management. In its most recent "pork report," the Tennessee Center for Policy Research describes much needed grant money allocated by the Tennessee Arts Commission to area arts organizations as "pork." Superficial press releases by TCPR are of little value when compared to the immense cultural benefits of an active arts community, which the reasonable funding by TAC provides. From Nashville Public Radio to cultural institutions such as the Nashville Film Festival to even the $500 that went to the Maury County Public Library in Columbia, TCPR takes issue. Really? While TCPR may not be a frequent visitor to the Columbia Public Library, modest support of such small organizations can have an exponential effect on the communities served. An organization like TCPR, with an avowed policy interest in education, should appreciate the support of such organizations as libraries. In addition, a vibrant arts community means jobs across the state, and an overall improvement of quality of life. Events like the Film Festival, for example, result in increased tourist spending, an important source of tax dollars for Tennessee. According to a 2007 study by Americans for the Arts, these organizations generated substantial economic benefits. 5.7 million full-time equivalent jobs $104.2 billion in household income $7.9 billion in local government tax revenues $9.1 billion in state government tax revenues $12.6 billion in federal income tax revenues The benefits from investments in the arts are clear, generating jobs and revenue which can result in additional spending in areas such as education. One would think TCPR would understand this correlation, since another supposed policy focus is economic development. In the end, the Tennessee Arts Commission offers vital grants that make lasting and substantial differences throughout Tennessee every year, which dwarf the effects of a TCPR press release aimed at making headlines for a day or so.

It's a good thing Corrine is so incredibly hot 'cause she isn't much on media strategy.
If Drew's releases are so lame and irrelevant, why draw MORE attention to them sending out your own press release? Doesn't that sort of keep the story going?
The story was already dead. It had a one day shelf life (thankfully). Now, Louis' press shop is keeping it going for another week. Brilliant.
As an aside, isn't TCPR a non-profit? Yep. Should the Center really be getting in the middle of two of the city's non-profits and picking a side? Or do you have to pay the monthly vig to the Center to be considered a constituent? Probably. If TCPR had paid more in membership dues, would the Center have sided with TCPR? Just curious. Non-profits get in public pissing matches all the time in this town. When was the last time Mr. Lavine's office issued a press release from their ivory tower?
Lots of questions, not many answers.

Seems like TCPR baselessly attacked a bunch of non-profits for no reason other than that's what they do- traffic in baseless b.s.. Besides, calling TCPR a "non-profit" is like calling the GOP a "viable, national political party". It's technically correct (at least until the IRS gets around to examing TCPR's status) but in no way represents reality.

I don't really disagree with you. I just don't like Lavine's shop picking and choosing who they are going to represent as constituents.
Truthfully, there are quite a few nonprofits in this town that are, as you say, in "reality" not non-profits but special interests representing their founders either monetarily or idealogically. In "reality" they function with very little focus on their IRS stated purpose found on their 990s.
You have to be one of the Chamber luvin', Music City Center boostin' back slappers to get in good with the "Center." Drew is no angel, but neither is the "Center." They are their own game.
