With 250 supporters, Ron Ramsey kicks off his campaign for governor at one minute after midnight just as the law's ban on fund-raising expired for the year. State Sen. Jack Johnson led the crowd in a countdown to 12:01 a.m., then handed Ramsey his first contribution. "Obviously I can start raising money now, and that's the one thing I've been behind the eight-ball on," Ramsey says. ... Bill Haslam announces he's already raised $3 million, and Tom Ingram says the campaign plans to stay positive. Why not?
"One of the tenets of a good campaign is not get distracted, and not to get blown off course by reacting to what other people do" Ingram said. "From our perspective, I don't see any reason for us to be anything other than respectful."

The governor expects lawsuits over cuts to mental health agencies. ... How House Democrats killed the charter schools bill. ... Horse meat bills are on hold. ... Supporters speak out for Shelby County gay rights proposal. ... The Commercial Appeal is for it. ... Preachers come out against guns in bars.
The Rev. Robert Hogan:

"The religious right doesn't condone violence. You're not courting us by giving the possibility of more violence and bloodshed."
