Here's the surprise of the day: Our Republican-run Senate is balking at that wonderful Christian Right-backed bill to deny doctor-patient confidentiality to teens. Yes the bill, which passed the House Judiciary Committee after weeks of anguished debate, nearly died this week in the Senate General Welfare Committee. The vote was 1-1 with seven senators not voting. That meant they thought the bill really sucked, but they were too afraid of the evangelicals to go on record voting no. What happened? Well, it took her quite some little time, but Dr. Veronica Gunn, the state's chief medical officer, finally persuaded the many knotheads on this committee that Sen. Mae Beavers' bill is stupid public policy. First, it probably would cost the state nearly $7 million in Title X federal family planning money. Title X specifically requires confidentiality. And second, it would discourage teens from seeking treatment for STDs and other embarrassing illnesses--depression and other mental health disorders being among them, Gunn observed. "And this would disproportionately affect impoverished and minority populations," she added. "We've got a lot of poor women out there who wouldn't get basic health care without our Title X funds," Sen. Beverly Marrero, D-Memphis agreed. "I wish we lived in a world in which all parents are good parents, but unfortunately we don't." Sen. Douglas Henry, D-Nashville, had trouble imagining this world in which children can sneak around on their parents and go to the doctor without their permission. That never happened on the old plantation or in any other "right-thinking community." But he finally acknowledged that he'd rather not see children harmed.
"I can't imagine a right-thinking community where the parent should not have some involvement in the child's medical condition, whether STD or otherwise. I think the bill is aimed at something that's very real and very proper: To vindicate the rights of parents. That's the high duty of any community. But we ought to cure it, Mr. chairman, in such a way as to not maim or kill a bunch of children. That's what I'm talking about."
Pith's favorite action hero, freshman Rep. Tony Shipley, is the House sponsor of this bill. He was sitting on the front row watching the Senate proceedings. We're surprised he didn't invoke God's wrath, scoop up the senators and drop them into the Cumberland River. Actually, we're sorry he didn't, but that's another story.

Does it ever occur to those folks that not everyone has a mature, responsible, supportive set of parents who might not exactly be supportive of your problems, who might throw you out of the house, beat you up or something worse if you did something they didnt' agree with. Or parents who are so checked out they don't give a hoot, and won't participate in their kids problems? The world is full of less than ideal situations. If you want to kill a bunch of children, I can't imagine a better way than to fix it so that you have to tell your parents about things that may cause them to kill you in many various ways. They'll never ask for help under these circumstances.
