The question is not about if/when this area will develop- it is about how this area will develop. Traffic, bridges,& phoney-baloney grants of land to TSU aside, the issue before the Metro Planning Commission is should Davidson County get into the "edge city" game to compete with the tax revenue generators of BrentwoodCoolSpringsFranklin, SmyrnaMufreesboro and MtJuiletHendersonville. I say, yes.
I don't know, Bender. I hear you on being competitive with the burbs, but the infrastructure costs to this seem enormous. The vast majority of the people/businesses moving there will be from Davidson, so we're just relocating our existing population at greater expense.
You gotta remember that most of the businesses Tennessee has recruited in the past came courtesy of huge welfare enticements. Given the inherent fiscal problems of our governments, which will remain if our plan is to simply keep jacking the sales tax, the days of welfare are probably over.
Finally, the project runs afoul of the general consensus that travel -- i.e. gas -- will soon become cost-prohibitive. I can't believe added sprawl is the answer to all this.
Building a gigantic "Cool Springs" in this area is going to be profitable to only the few who are involved. Don't tell me three bridges will be built with THEIR money! I know who will ultimately lose the beautiful green spaces that are a plus for Davidson County! Traffic is already almost unbearable; we hope this nightmare will not take place.
Maytown Center is not a good idea.. Their are already enough Malls/Business Campuses, and "Coolsprings" in the Nashville Area, why do we need another, at not only the expense of the tax payer, but also at the expense of another green space as well? I'm not naive enough to think that the May family will just sit on this property and sell it cheap or donate it Nashville for conservation, though that would be ideal, but more urban sprawl is not the answer....
Maytown promises jobs to Middle Tennesseans? Yeah, we'll see how that goes. Maybe they'll give some of us some maintenance positions and janitorial jobs, the real high paying top end jobs.. And the 50$ million dollar bridge? Or excuse me Bridges... Hmmm well that's not coming from their pockets, that's coming from ours. Not only is Maytown going to absolutely destroy a beautiful part of Davidson county, despite what the May Family says, it's going to cost us money that we will not see a return on for decades. It's at least 30 years of construction and then once things get established, we may or may not see a return on the tax money spent.
Maytown is a bad idea all the way around and I hope the rest of Nashville sees it this way as well.
