The Holy War We're Totally Not Fighting

A GQ piece on Donald Rumsfeld has been making the rounds lately and boy is it ever juicy. Long story short: he's an asshole and everyone hates him. The one Bush administration official who didn't want this guy to run across a rabid bear from the get-go was, unsurprisingly, Bush himself. Rumsfeld was able to Eddie Haskell his way into relatively unquestioned power within the administration by basically talking down to our simple former leader. With hilarious (disastrous) results! Rumsfeld was aware (like we all are) that our last President is a religious man who is wholly incapable of putting his Christianity into context. Rummy carried on and expanded a tradition of handing over classified reports on the Middle East...covered in Bible quotes. Question: was anyone, anywhere, ever naïve enough to think that Bush was an actual statesman making logical, calculated decisions about the real world? Oh really, like half the country? We are so screwed. The slideshow must be seen to be believed. The cover pages of the document that was "a daily digest of critical military intelligence so classified that it circulated among only a handful of Pentagon leaders and the president" looked like they were shat from a Kirkland's catalog. The out-of-context scripture juxtaposed with images of American troops fighting a war against Muslim guerillas in various parts of the Middle East apparently rubbed some former Bush administration officials the wrong way because NO DUH. They're the anonymous high school mean girls dishing on Rumsfeld now, but you know what? Too little too late. Putting aside the fact that this practice was Constitutionally terrifying at worst and inappropriate at best, there are still many nits to pick with the cover sheets. Like, were there any graphic designers in Rumsfeld's employ? Couldn't someone have at least maintained some font consistency? I guess we should be grateful for small miracles. I didn't see any Comic Sans.

"Were there any graphic designers in Rumsfeld's employ?"
-We both know that most quality graphic design people smoke weed and can't get security clearances.
"Rummy carried on and expanded a tradition of handing over classified reports on the Middle East...covered in Bible quotes. "
-Shocking that Rummy's staff referenced scripture at the beginning of military meetings in a time of crisis huh? (those "documents" are cover slides for powerpoint presentations used at briefings, prepared by military advisors for Rummy, not by him). Stalin and the Hitler might have had defense ministers who shut people out for expressing faith in God supporting a military effort, but everybody else in history not so much. Soldiers believe in God...and you don't ever want to live in a world where they don't.
"I guess we should be grateful for small miracles."
-Like your paycheck, which you don't deserve...this article is garbage.

Guess you don't watch Rachel Maddow. It's pretty sad how all those characters manipulated each other and us and in the meantime killed 100,000+ people and our troops and wrecked our economy. You are right: garbage.

Ben Parks - Quite obviously, not all soldiers believe in God. Do you believe the ones who do are better soldiers because of it than the non-believers? If so, why? Please explain why an army of athiests would be so horrible. Perhaps you believe a soldier needs a God to kill in the name of.
Also, does every writer with whom you disagree not deserve a paycheck? Something about that and your obvious love of God seems in conflict.

Marvin: "Quite obviously, not all soldiers believe in God."
-I do not disagree. Many do not, including Marines I knew during my first two deployments to Iraq. People fight for any number of reasons including love for their family and home. Those facts are irrelevant to the issue of whether a US military leader should suppress the religious expression of his subordinates when they suggest God supports a military effort in a power point presentation.
"Perhaps you believe a soldier needs a God to kill in the name of."
-No, its not in killing that a soldier finds need for God. Rather, faith helps soldiers face their own mortality and the deaths of colleagues. Head over to the atheist section in your local military cemetery sometime and let me know what you find.
Sueyyyy: "It's pretty sad...killed 100,000+ people and our troops and wrecked our economy."
-Warfare is more than sad...extreme tragedy comes to mind, but how much blame do you put on Bush and how much on Hussein? Now try asking that question to a Shiite Iraqi without ears because Saddam had them removed along with 200 others. Try asking that question to a Kurd whose family was gassed for disobedience. How easy is the whole truth?
"obviously don't listen to Rachael Maddow..."
-Maddow gets paid to tell angry people what they want to hear and point fingers. Her opinion worth about as much as Rush Limbaugh's in the sum. Both spew garbage when it suits them, and neither has any skin in the game other than ratings. Real answers are complex and difficult for everyone because blame is shared among liberals and conservatives alike. Real answers also make lousy sound bites.

When you look back, you have to wonder why Cheney and company picked Iraq for their holy war. There are so many countries where atrocities are taking place.
