House Republicans Shake Their Fists at Planned Parenthood

State House Republicans are desperately trying to piss on the evil Planned Parenthood's leg this session, but they're missing the mark with a bill that just passed the House Health and Human Resources Committee. Aimed only at Nashville and Memphis, where too many poor women are getting pregnant to suit the Republicans, the legislation by Rep. Joey Hensley directs the administration to give priority to the county health departments in distributing federal family planning money. Unfortunately for the wingnuts, those departments don't want the money and have never applied for it. Their staffs aren't large enough to provide the services. Therefore, it'll keep going to Planned Parenthood. The committee voted 13-8 for the bill over the protests of Democrats. Rep. Joanne Favors, D-Chattanooga, turned her ire on Hensley, who is a physician. "I don't know what your agenda is," she scolded him, "but it's certainly not because you're concerned about patients." Afterward, the ACLU's Hedy Weinberg said, "They're claiming they're trying to stop abortions, but Planned Parenthood actually prevents unwanted pregnancies through quality family planning services." I could comment on the relative number of African-Americans in Nashville and Memphis as compared to Knoxville, couldn't I?

I hope Joey Hensley's kidneys fail.

The origins of Planned Parenthood chapters in the South were started by blueblood Republican women, often transplants from the North, to stop the "birthing" of illegitimate babies. The name tells all: "planned" parenthood -- birth control and information about how one gets pregnant and how to prevent it. The present anti-planned parenthood wingnuts are an enigma.

I know the state GOP wants to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood, but it's OK, because the Republicans are so pro-life that they're also restoring direct cash payments to poverty-stricken mothers forced to bear children by getting rid of the lifetime limits from the current system, and increasing welfare payments to a higher level than the old AFDC program. That's in addition to increasing the food stamp allowance and giving tax breaks to grocery stores that move into the "nutrition deserts" that exist in poor urban neighborhoods.
I hear the TN Republican Party is also planning on increasing the minimum wage and subsidizing child care so single mothers can work for a wage that actually pays above the starvation level.
The GOP is doing all of this to help poor children who would have otherwise been more likely to have been aborted because they are so honestly and passionately committed to Life.

I want some of what you are on, DG.

The report says that in 2006 Planned Parenthood clinics performed 289,750 abortions and in 2007 the number was 305,310.

Damn, Jeff, they missed you.
Shame, that.

You have to wonder how a grown man could possibly have been aborted in 2006 or 2007. Or why someone presumably "pro-life" would want that anyway.
Weird and psychotic, that.

Look up, Marvin!
A point just went right over your pointy little head.

DG, you are an imbecile. Stop assisting government theft. The abortion issue aside there is nothing that legitimately authorizes its funding. It should end.

Kevin, I'm pointing out that nothing has changed in the decades since it was pointed out that Republicans vote like they think life begins at conception and ends at birth.
If you want the government to force women to bear children, then accept that the government should help women pat to raise those children. Otherwise, you're a typical "pro-life" hypocrite.

It's the responsibility of the parents, not the government, to raise children.

Children whom you want the government to force women to bear.... Regardless of how poor the mother and child will be. Or whether they have healthcare, or nutritious food, etc,
You're a hypocrite.

the vast majority of women that are aborting their children are middle class - the women that could actually take care of their children - poor women on the government dole keep pumping out children to get more money - so abortion is in reality gonna leave us with lots of kids nobody wants

Now that is some logic.
Abortion rates are actually higher for poor women, and the answer "cannot afford a child" has always been the #1 or #2 reason in surveys about why women have them.
Pro-life hypocrisy.

Ooh, classist and, by extension, racist arguments are my favorites. Tell me more about these welfare mothers and how they see their unwanted, poverty-stricken children as little more than paychecks!

i think women who are responsible enough to have sex should be more than responsible enough to take care of THEIR OWN child. a mother who murders her child because she had to have an orgasm is the lowest of the lows.
dont want a baby? then dont sleep around. its that easy.
rape or incest pregancy? THATS who needs government assistance not women who cant control themselves sexually.
if women had to take their OWN lives if they got pregnant, im sure that orgasm wouldnt sound so great.
stop murdering your children.
stupidity.
