The Senate has just voted 24-8 for the guns-in-parks bill. Unlike the House version, which leaves it up to local governments to decide what to do, the Senate bill opens all parks to guns unless city councils and county commissions vote to ban the weapons. If local governments take no action, then handgun carry permit holders can stride around with their pistols on their hips right there next to your children playing on the monkey bars.
Sen. Mae Beavers, R-Mount Juliet, gave this explanation:
"The point of this bill is to give law-abiding and responsible permit holders a fighting chance when confronted by a rapist or a murderer while in a state or local park. A carry permit holder should not have to have a compelling reason to carry in a park but the government should have a compelling reason for them not to carry in a park."
We're so happy gunmen will feel safer in our playgrounds.
