Fans of lively debate rejoice! From 2 to 4 PM on Sunday May 31st, Vanderbilt will host a panel discussion on the Music City Center, the proposed billion dollar convention center in downtown Nashville. Butch Spyridon, president of the Nashville Convention & Visitor's Bureau, will represent the pros. While the con corner will feature University of Texas at San Antonio's urban studies professor Dr. Heywood Sanders, a skeptic whose scathing critiques of convention center expansions have earned him the supervillainy nickname of Dr. No. No matter your thoughts on the Music City Center, this is a big fat win for Nashville. Sticking two smart people in front of microphones can only help sharpen the debate. Kudos to Vice Mayor Diane Neighbors and all five of Metro Council's At-Large members for throwing their weight behind the idea. (With an extra special double-kudos to Megan Barry, who led the charge.) Admission is free, so if you're a taxpaying resident of Davidson County you've got no excuse not to show up. And in case you think this is going to be some boring policy-wonk drone-fest, rest assured that Pith's many conversations with both Sanders and Spyridon have been filled with no shortage of humor and irony. Both guys know how to turn a phrase, otherwise they wouldn't be so good at their jobs. A specific location hasn't been found yet. But rest assured when it does we'll post it. Along with roughly 184 other reminders. Seriously, it's gonna be Flog City for this slugfest.
