The Death of the National GOP Mirrors the Death of Tennessee Democrats

Time magazine this week offers one of the smarter takes on the supposed death of the national Republican Party. The one note culture wars and groveling before big business, which play so well here, threaten to make them extinct in the rest of the country. But writer Michael Grunwald is wise enough to note the cyclical nature of these things. Recent history is loaded with such obituaries, only to find the exiled soon hailed as conquering heroes when the other side screws up.

But the more interesting thing is how the article speaks to Tennessee Democrats. Take out every reference to the national GOP, insert Tennessee Democrats, and you wouldn't have to change a thing. Except our guys aren't simply the Party of No. When it comes to caving on all matters of principle, They're the Party of Can I Carry Your Luggage, Sir. Or the Party of Quit Bothering Me I'm Just Trying to Collect a Paycheck, Pal.

If national Republicans are threatened, Tennessee Democrats look like the guy who dies and no one finds his body for three weeks because they didn't notice he was missing. Read it for yourself. The parallels are startling.
