Interesting
story in the Tennessean today about a study that finds 62 percent of white, evangelical Protestants believe torture is cool.
This is perhaps not surprising because most who fall into this particular category are Republican, are generally against equal rights for gays, perhaps still harbor some racist resentment and comprise most of this nation's drumbeat to war.
Still, when did the Christian Right, the
Moral Majority, forsake its morals. Torture has been shown to be ineffective and, more than that, simply downright beneath us as the Shining Beacon of the world we're supposed to be. The moral turpitude that seems to have settled in during the W. reign is troubling to bigwigs in Christian hierarchy.
"There are some things you should never do to another human being," Richard Land, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist convention told the Tennessean.
I could be totally off base here, but I can't help but wonder if the fact that the war we wage today, against groups who subscribe to a fundamentalist version of Islam, has something to do with an increased acceptance of torture.
