Bristol Palin: Is Mom Using Her as a Political Prop?

Posted by Pete Kotz on Fri, May 8, 2009 at 5:33 AM

Say what you want about Sarah Palin's politics, but she seems to have a nice enough family. Just like in any other, the parents might believe one thing, but the children may do something entirely different. So it goes with daughter Bristol's teen mother affair. But what does appear a bit unseemly is Bristol's new prominence as a spokeswoman for abstinence. Suddenly, her and pop are all over the television, preaching abstinence in Lifetime movie fashion (see video above). It's hard to bust on a 19-year-old girl for the native hypocrisy in the whole deal. Contradictions are the essence of being a teenager, and she comes off as fairly collected and well-spoken. What is a little weird is seeing mom and dad trot their daughter out like this. You're left to believe they're using Bristol as prop for mom's career, or summoning her for damage control because she didn't marry the kid who impregnated her, and they need to appease Sarah's core supporters, the finger waving right. Does anyone else find this unbecoming? Or am I just suffering from a sphincter attack?

It should be remembered that Sarah Palin originally threw her daughter under the bus -- by outing her pregnancy -- in order to refute the rumor that baby Trig was actually Bristol's and Sarah only pretended to be the mother in order to shield Bristol. In other words, Sarah outed Bristol to kill a rumor that might have gotten Sarah some sympathetic support.
Then we had the promise that Bristol would have the baby AND marry Levi. Since the delivery date was after Election Day, I was expecting a post-election announcement that Bristol had a fortuitous but entirely unexpected "miscarriage" (and I'll bet that I was not the only one with that expectation).
Instead, we have this situation. Levi reported that Sarah knew that he and Bristol were knocking boots. The wedding is called off -- evidently Levi realized that only a sitting Vice-President can get away with using a shotgun on somebody. Bristol is being trotted out as the poster child for abstinence -- which sort of makes you wonder about her attitude toward baby Tripp, who will grow up with an unerasable stigma -- although it was probably the abstinence training that left her unprepared to use birth control.
And Sarah Palin thinks that turning her daughter into a sideshow attraction will help her get elected President!

I'm on the fence as to whether or not I even have feelings about these damn kids. On the one hand, Bristol was cool for a second when she said abstinence was "unrealistic." She's pulled a 180 on that bit of truth-telling (likely at the insistnce of her parents) and is now promoting abstinence...with a baby on her lap. That would be the equivalent Keifer Sutherland doing a drunk-driving PSA while totally hungover.
She and her mooky ex seem like nice enough kids, they really do. What would make them nicer would be if they stopped being on TV for a hot minute. I mean really - who actually cares about their drama and redneckery? Fewer people than Sarah Palin believes.
I can't suss out the motivation. Levi and his family seemed to be in it for the fame and public airing of dirty laundry, the Palins are doing it because...why? In what way does trotting out your daugther and branding her with a scarlet letter in any way make you a sympathetic politican? Who are you trying to win over? The people who already like you?
It's just one big media fail all around.

I didn't lose respect for Sarah Palin over this.
I lost all respect for her a long time ago.
I do feel sorry for the kid.

I thought that's what Trig was for.

A child growing up in the home of a Governor or any other politician is going to be alot more versed in not only politics but also more prone to taking an active role in causes in which they believe. Just look at all the Kennedy's. The ones not in politics are participating in a variety of causes and have since they were young adults. Political parents often breed activist children.
The reality of being a mother at 19 is a real wake up call whether its in or out of the spotlight. If she is at all like her Mother then it is not unusual that she might see what obstacles she has put in not only her own life-path but the path of the son she loves and want to speak out to warn other teens and young women of a similar circumstance. She certainly would see she has an opportunity an unknown 19 year old would not.
Alot of us make mistakes that later we could kick ourselves over them. Waking up to reality and acknowledging it makes one human and more of an adult. There will always be finger pointers who go "but but look what you did". Yeah ... and look what I learned. Its called growth. If you've never experienced growth via the road of hard knocks ... you probably don't have much in common with the average human.
Another reason besides a willingness to share her own experience in order to help others could also be the media tour the 19 year old Father recently undertook. I didn't hear him speak of learning anything. Maybe she wanted to put her own face on the story and not her Mom's or the young man's (who she probably loved), or the media's ... but her own face and story.
Personally I think it takes guts to do it.

How was she 17 last summer and 19 this spring? Did I lose a whole year again, damnit?

She is better behaved as a teen than Ted Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Bob Torricelli, Blago, Ray Blanton, or William Jefferson as adults.

In case you missed the point, those are all Democrats. No prominent Republicans have ever had affairs or otherwise behaved in an inappropriate manner. Republicans do not do that. Just Democrats.

Poor Bristol Palin. First her mother trotted her and her boyfriend out to demonstrate how Christian and pro-life they are, all to garner votes for Mom. John McCain even pointed to them and said, "What a beautiful family." Then, every time we saw the GOP team during the presidential election, one of the Palin children, even the youngest, seemed to be carrying around the baby Trigg. It is almost as if Sarah and Todd Palin procreate at will, then let their other children raise them. I think the Palins are a disfunctional lot and I feel very, very sorry for Bristol. Her parents should be flogged.

The new infertility treatment is amazingly good, but some are on the other fence and claim it is not as good as the icsi sperm injections. It works well, but isn't as fast or reliable. If you frequently think of using the hormones or supplements that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot for infertilty solutions look no furhter than fertilityleaders.com.
