Every so often, a kook from elsewhere can take your mind off the kookdom that is the Tennessee legislature by offering you the chance to say, "At least he's not from here." Today that guy is Republican Congressman Joe Barton of Texas.
Like most college football fans,
he wants the NCAA to convert its bowl system to a playoff series, so he's introduced legislation barring the NCAA from using the words "national champion" until it concedes to his wishes. Anything else, according to Barton, is "communism." Colleges, naturally, don't want to do this, since it would turn lesser bowls in a football version of the NIT, and perhaps cost them a large pile of jack.
What's interesting is that Barton is pushing his bill through the House subcommittee for commerce, trade and consumer protection. Seeing as how it's the depression and all, one would think there are far more pressing matters in the areas of commerce, trade and consumer protection.
But here's the upside: If he were from Tennessee, he'd likely be pushing for a playoff series where
we can all bring our guns.
