Say what you will about the pseudo-science of Top 10 lists. But Forbes' run down of the most dangerous cities in America seems pretty spot on. Using the FBI's total number of rapes, robberies, murders and vicious beat downs for 2008, the business mag crowned Memphis runner-up to urban wasteland Detroit. No surprises there. The shock comes at the edge of the Top 10, with Nashville beating out Katrina-ravaged New Orleans AND blight-bitten Baltimore.* *Calling all David Simon wannabes. If you've been waiting for the right inspiration to create a Music City version of The Wire, consider this the point-blank shot across your bow. In searching for an explanation for the results, Forbes points out that all the cities share one thing in common: they've all been identified as transit points for Mexican drug cartels by the Department of Justice. For cause and effect it's pretty weak--interstate hubs have, and always will be, the lifeblood of drug trafficking. It's like creating a Most Likely to Be Destroyed By Hurricanes list and pointing out that all the cities are near the ocean. So in lieu of a highly-educated guess (something we're not qualified to make), Pith has one question: Is this the right time to mention that our police chief considers ticketing speeders such a high priority he named the plan behind it Mission One? No? OK, just checking. (H/T: Nashvillest)
