Trying to find cohesive nuggets in the dung pile that is Phil Valentine's writing is a thankless job. Fortunately for Pith, this week Southern Beale did the dirty work for us a full two days before Valentine's usual Sunday editorial even ran.

Predictably, Valentine's 800 words focused mainly on the Tea Parties, last week's national orgy of vacuous dissent. But he also took time to touch on a controversial report from the Department of Homeland Security, documenting a rise in recruitment among right-wing extremists. Valentine's take: "This threat assessment seemed to link the beliefs and actions of ordinary citizens with those of violent militia movements."

Southern Beale's:
The predictable right-wing pearl clutching over a Dept. Of Homeland Security report about extremist groups has put my bullshit meter into overdrive. The fact that the report was initially requested by the Bush Administration, although the Malkintents refer to it as the "Obama report," was my first clue. The fact that they completely ignored this January 26, 2009 report on left-wing extremists was my second clue. But, facts be damned, this is a made-for-prime-time, right-wing talking point, neatly manufactured and packaged by the conservative echo chamber to reinforce the stereotype that Democrats/liberals hate the troops, Obama is gutting the military, and ZOMG we're all gonna diiiiiiieeeee!!!!!!!11!!1!

It's funny because I actually tuned into his show in the car the other day and he was talking about this very topic. He must talk about the same crap all the time because I don't listen to him often and it's always in small doses but it's funny that he happened to be talking about this. He was bemoaning the fact that only "right-wing" groups were mentioned. Then one of his ditto-head callers went down a list of left- wing fringe groups like PETA and some environmental groups and asked Phil if they were included. Phil said no and that was an example of the governments bias against conservatives. He also pointed out that those left-wing groups were more dangerous to our country's security than right-wing groups, who only care about their country. Hilarious. The patent absurdity of that comment (does he ever read some right-wing blogs and the things that some of those guys say, and the veiled threats, about the president) is striking enough. Of course, like Southern Beale pointed out, left-winger groups were reported previously.
And in response to an earlier posting about where were all the George Will conservatives? The answer is pretty clear: there aren't any. There are only echo chamber Valentine-esque populist conservatives, who all feel like everyone is out to get them. That is the sorry state of American conservatism these days.

He's a pathetic small-time Rush-wannabe who spews hate toward Mexicans and talks through his nose. Every time a commercial airs with his voice, I turn it off in silent protest of his hatred and rabble-rousing. He does have at least one big fan though - Phil Valentine!

how is phil valentine the least bit racist? I can see how you guys might disagree with him politically, but I do not hear any evidence of him being racist.
