Self-defense instructor Chris Garland and MMA trainer Ed Clay's decade-long beef comes to a head tonight. According to Shane Messer, Clay's partner at Nashville MMA, the two will meet at 5:30 at 490 Allied Drive for a five-minute match that will feature "no striking, nor manipulation of small joints." Exactly what that means, we have no idea.

As former Scene writer P.J. Tobia described him in a February article, Garland (pictured at right) is "equal parts Hulk Hogan and Rex from Napoleon Dynamite (the guy who yells, "Bow to your sensei!")." He's also alleged to have killed a bird during a demonstration gone wrong and lied about being in the Special Forces.

Exactly what brings these two relentless self-promoters men to blows is unclear. According to Messner, "Chris wants to prove his skills on the mat with Ed and take out his frustration for all these accusations that Ed supposedly (but didn't) make over the past 10 years." But who cares about backstory? Someone gon' get beat!

Chris backed out today, but did say he would be at Nashville MMA tomorrow, Wednesday, night at 5:30 to battle it out with Ed.
We have the audio of the accusations Chris made as well as his challenging Ed.
For the record, Ed had NEVER said anything derogatory about Garland, never called or sent emails to his family, he did want some of our white belts to train with him so we could validate his claims to be the best in Nashville, and we hope, after Ed is finished with him, that he will grapple with some of our white belts. If he is as good as he claims, this will be no problem.

Chris Garland is known for challenging sensei's at different schools and backing out. He is obviously mentally ill, a wierdo and a liar. It is sad because he actually looks pretty athletic in some of his videos. All this crap he CLAIMS about himself is a total lie. Chris fits the criteria of a cult leader. He needs to stop calling people out before he gets hurt and further embarassed. He got choked out in a minute and faked a nut shot in his 2 MMA fights.
Chris, PLEASE stop being a wierdo and just do your thing, there is a market for psycho, lying, wannabe Steven Segal martial artists.
Stop lying about your history, as people have proved it to be a lie.

Feel I need to be able to state that I thought it is a highly great posting. I've forever liked Mixed martial arts and it is so great to read a fabulous weblog that takes Mixed martial arts so seriously. I've not long ago began to be able to get into Mixed martial arts practicing myself and I am absolutely hoping to achieve at least a tad competitive at it. Not even wanting to stride in to a ring or whatever such as that just at this point! Any information about everything that I should be making time for in order to achieve very well. In any case, pleaqse do keep up the superb content with the site and also your extremely good articles.
