Rumors are flying that Bruce Pearl is headed to Memphis. Former Tiger's coach John Calipari recently jumped ship to the University of Kentucky, leaving behind a pair of size 14's and a six month's supply of pomade. The University of Tennessee coach would seem like a good fit -- he's got a lockdown on in-state recruits, and his damn-the-shotclock style attracts athletes of all stripes.

But whether or not Pearl signs the reported 7-year, $21 million dollar deal is immaterial. Because he's already won. Leverage is the name of the game in all negotiations. And when it comes to college head coaches, the terms of their stay are always negotiable.

Forget for a moment that UT's president just resigned after blunderously offering former football coach Phil Fulmer a golden parachute just to hang out around campus. Or that freshman may soon be denied the right to curse their calculus teachers. With the Memphis offer, Pearl can now demand more money for facilities and his assistants. Especially after newly-hired football coach Lane Kiffin just got a steamer-trunk full of cash to fill his staff.

And if ever you think that someone like Pearl can't be swayed by money, seeing as how he's probably already banked a couple million in his lifetime, we offer you one word: Alimony's.

Update: Leverage wins the day.

I do not know if he is going, but
It is dubious if anyone can make TN into a team that is in the top 5 year after year and can winn Natinanl Champs. Yes, they were "ranked" number 1, but that was shown to be a joke as one watched the team during the season.
Memphis is a B-ball school only. It does have more money for b-ball since the last I checked it does not have a football team.
So.... he can have a top 5 team year after year and he can win it all at Memphis.. but not at UT. So...
does he really want to go to a program that offers him everything are removes all reasons not to be great???
or he can stay at UT and it is great just to make it into the NCAA each year... a lot of coaches will hide behind the I love this conf blah blah..
So... UT saying is a better program in b-ball. No facts in teh world support this world view.
I'm not sure I want Pearl to come to Memphis... but if he really wants to be a superstar and a winner beyond measure... then MEMPHIS is THE PLACE
