"The subcommittee adopted another fine piece of legislation to bar the government from confiscating our weapons during martial law. It's one of those just-in-case bills, but you can never be too cautious when it comes to your personal arsenal."
Considering the NOPD illegally stole weapons from law abiding citizens during Katrina while criminals looted whatever they could, I think this makes perfect sense. But then again, I'm just working with the facts here...so what do I know?
I hate it when people in the midst of catastrophies steal food. Then again, if I remember my Katrina photojournalism and captions, white people generally "foraged" for food while black people tended to "loot" it.
Some racist idiot at AP labeling those two pictures the way they did hardly makes a case for your point of view, Ashley.
And I'm not talking about desperate people ganking a case of Ramon noodles, Im talking about hardened criminals roaming NO and stealing cars, food, whatever at GUNPOINT. And I shouldnt be allowed to defend myself?
You people are delusional.
Kevin I think Ashley is referring to the fact that the media coverage was such that when they labeled the same thing differently based on skin color. So white folks that took food from a store were foraging while black folks that took food from a store were looting.
As far as this bill goes it seems like just more nonsense from our legislators. I wish they would work on job creation, improving our schools, or anything that has a positive impact on the citizens of the State instead of all this worthless crud.
I'm willing to bet at least one of those crimes was committed by a licensed gun owner who viewed car theft as a way to defend their life. Over 1,500 people died because of Katrina. Drowning was a serious possibility. If you're in a panic, your life really is threatened, and you have a gun but not a way out of town, who knows what a person becomes capable of? Real, genuine fear trumps morality and rationality on a hilariously regular basis, and I just think the fewer guns play into that possibilty, the better.
"...and I just think the fewer guns play into that possibilty, the better."
Ashley, I completely agree. I mean, when you look at the extraordinarily low violent crime rates in places like Washington DC, Chicago, and other areas of the country which have enacted legislation which limits/bans guns, I see how your can easily substantiate your position.
Wa....wait....what was the question??
Ashley, if anyone knows about "real, genuine fear" it's Kevin. He can't walk from his car in the parking lot into a restaurant, or take a stroll in the park without being stricken with cold-sweat, trembling fear.
UNLESS of course, he's got his little phallic symbol tucked in his pants.
When he was a kid, the neighborhood girls taunted him: "Scaredy pants, scaredy pants...."
Did the wacked out kid at VA Tech have carry permit? YES
Did the crazy right wing gay hater that killed the minister for letting gays in his church have a gun permit? YES
Do plenty of people with carry permits kill people? YES
We don't need guns in parks, schools, or bars!
Was Cho able to bring a weapon on the campus of Virginia Tech despite it being a "gun free zone?"
YES!
Did Jeanne Assam stop a whacko in the church in Colorado with her legally owned and carried weapon?
YES!
Hey this is fun!
This is making me lie back and think of England again...you know what they call the violence that goes on over there? Knifecrime. All one word! Say it with me: KNIFECRIME! I love it. It's like a bad band name or an awesome movie title. Don't make me knifecrime you!
Guess how many murders there were in London in 2007? 160.
In NYC in 2007? 494.

Jeff? Is that you?
"Did the wacked out kid at VA Tech have carry permit? YES"
- You are mistaken or you are a liar. Which is it?
"Do plenty of people with carry permits kill people? YES"
Your source please. Thanks.
"Ashley says:

- Me too. Prove it.
And if you want to move to London and have no civil rights, be my guest. This is a free country. It isn't perfect, but at least you don't need permission from govt to wipe your nose...
Yeah, those fascist Brits (all Europeans, really) hate rights. It's as bad as North Korea over there.
I have read a lot of responses from Kevin. All appear to have to do with guns. Let's cut to the chase and do a cliff notes version of all of these comments: in short, if you don't agree with Kevin on the meaning of the 2nd amendment, you are stupid. I have a feeling it's the same with all subjects. If you don't agree with Kevin politically, theologically, sports or anything else, you are just stupid. But come to the all of the blogs where he imparts his wisdom and you will surely come to understand.
I'm not going to weigh in on the merits of the individual legislation. Some are sound; some aren't (like the bill banning business owners from setting policy on their own property).
I've said this before, I'm a classic conservative - a Goldwater conservative. I believe in keeping government out of people's business. I feel the same about guns, gays, and abortion. If you're not bothering me, it's none of my business.
Don't like guns. Don't buy one.
Don't like gays. Don't ask a dude out (or a woman, if you're a woman).
Don't like abortion. Don't have one.
Too many people on both sides of the ideological spectrum want to tell everyone else what they can and can't do. Screw that.

Ashley will come face to face with the error of her thinking...probably in the dark, in a park, on a lark...that turns bad or even deadly for Ashley.
In just a split second the realization will strike that she was wrong...ooops...too late.
So what are we going to do Ashely and the rest of you slave wannabes? Those of us that still believe in liberty and the founding of this country and those of you that believe the government should control every aspect of life? We are clearly diametrically opposed. We don't want to live in your control freak world and you all are too scared and immature for the animating contest of freedom. We are a country completely divided and I see no hope of reconciliation. All we ask is to be left alone to raise our families. You, on the other hand, think it is your business to tell us how to live, what we can own, where we can go, who we can associate with, how much of our hard earned pay we are allowed to keep, etc. And, you can't even see just how sick that is, forcing your will on others at the point of the proxy gun of a government thug. You anti folk are real pieces of work.
Why isn’t Rep. Stacey Campfield calling for the full and immediate REPEAL of all existing gun laws, as well as the cessation of any new ones? THAT would be defending the Second Amendment. Doing anything less is allowing its infringement to continue unabated. For seventy-five years, the Second Amendment has been infringed and not one so-called “gun rights” organization, including the NRA, have demanded the repeal of the laws that stand in direct and blatant violation of the Second Amendment. The gun-owning public has been so brainwashed with propaganda from these organizations they actually believe that passing still more laws is somehow “protecting” the Second Amendment. You don’t protect it by ignoring its infringement and adding to that infringement by asking government permission to have a little bit of your freedom back.
""Did the wacked out kid at VA Tech have carry permit? YES""
NO he did NOT have a concealed carry permit. He did fill out the paper work required to purchase a firearm at least twice. MY guess is that the Medical privacy laws allowed him to lie about his mental state on the paperwork and get away with it.
""Did the crazy right wing gay hater that killed the minister for letting gays in his church have a gun permit? YES""
I don't know if he did or didn't but it is ludicrous to assume that a violent criminal is going to care about gun laws.
""Do plenty of people with carry permits kill people? YES""
Please do a little research of how many violent crimes are committed by people who have a concealed carry permit. What you will find is that it is less than the general population by a wide margin.
http://www.google.com/search?q=FBI+statistics++concealed+carry+permit
The most violent criminals are the ones that the cops know all too well. They have the long rap sheets but for some reason they are not in prison.
""We don't need guns in parks, schools, or bars!""
It's too bad that VA Tech and Columbine didn't have such a law in place. Those massacres would never have happened.
Oh wait... it WAS against the law to have guns there.
We gun-nuts aren't afraid they'll take away out guns, we're afraid they'll take away our Unalienable Rights (evdienced by recent illegal wiretaps, torture, foreign renditions, invalidation of Habeus Corpus and Posse Comitatus, illegal wiretaps, "no-knock" warrants, etc.). Please note:
1] Rights predate government. 2] Rights, akin to breathing, require neither permission nor acceptance to exist. 3] Amendment Two does not give, grant, nor confer "the right of the people to keep and bear arms" - it GUARANTEES that Right and bars government from infringing upon it. 4] SCOTUS has consistently ruled the police are not responsible for the safety of the individual citizen.
With the above facts in mind and since the definitions of "infringed" and "unalienable" are the same today as they were in the 18th century when the Bill of Rights was ratified, one must wonder exactly what part of "shall not be infringed" remains open to interpretation?
Good point Kevin. Let's don't forget that through NAFTA "we" made an agreement with Canada and Mexico that during a time of martial law, we could call upon foreign troops for aid. I tend to think of this as being the real April Fool's Joke - but it is no joke. Taking this into consideration, it is only prudent for law abiding citizens to be armed, during times of peace and during times of crisis.
I totally agree with FarmerTomato and Lysander!
There is no such thing as Constitutional Rights, rather it's Rights listed in the Constitution! Those are rights God gave you, you have a right to defend yourself, you have a right to expect privacy, you have a right to say what you believe, etc. The Bill of Rights is just to REMIND the government of that fact.
For you sheep that think a gun is a bad thing, try this

By the way, I think the organization of Gun Owners of America is pushing for the repeal of all gun laws. Look through gunowners.org website.
