Shipley is offering important legislation to stop terrorism in its tracks. His strategy? Give Tennessee law officers basic carte blanche to go after terrorists before they come after us. Under his bill, search warrants could be obtained for terrorist hiding places when there's only "reasonable suspicion," not the "probable cause" now required. In other words, police could burst into your house if they sorta have a hunch you're a terrorist.
Much to Shipley's surprise, even the rubes on the House Judiciary subcommittee were a little taken aback by his bill's implications.
"Tell me exactly what brought this bill to you?" the curious chairman, Eric Watson, asked. Shipley replied that he'd love to answer that question but, if he did, he might have to kill the entire subcommittee.
"Mr. Chairman and members, there are situations in the state of Tennessee, and I would be happy to provide that information to you under a different circumstance. But let me offer this somewhat scrubbed explanation. There are circumstances in the state of Tennessee where we have individuals that are pseudo preparing in that environment. It sounds a little tacky. I'm trying to walk around this issue without getting into law enforcement's business and the sensitivity of that information. It simply empowers us under circumstances where terrorism activity or training is occurring to intervene a little more quickly."The subcommittee decided to delay voting on the bill to give time for the attorney general to think about whether it's OK if the legislature trashes the Fourth Amendment.

I think he must mean the militias putting together the "blood in the streets" coup that the gun bill and birth certificate commenters keep threatening. I wish.
Do you have a bill number for this Shipley tripe? I am thinking that the popular name for this legislation should be something like "The Paranoid Shipley Tennesse Mini-Patroit Act of 2009".
Whatta load...thanks a lot Kingsport for electing this doofus!

Tony Shipley's website states that he is employed by Homeland Security as an advisor to MapSync. What else can you expect? To them, you're a terrorist if you lean left on a blog post. Or maybe you're the wrong color, or your name sounds funny.
In response to a previous poster, as far as Kingsport electing Shipley, things were kinda warped. First, the redistricting that took place divided up District 1 into a mish-mash of gerrymandering that would have made Tom Delay proud. District 1 includes pockets of Bristol and extends down to Kingsport and now includes part of what used to be District 2. A great many of those voters who used to be in District 2 were very upset that they couldn't vote for Nathan Vaughn. Many asked for proof that their district had changed, but overall there was a great deal of discontent with the new district lines. Had the redistricting not been done, there would have been no doubt that Vaughn would have been re-elected.
Then there were the fake websites set up to fool the public into thinking they were actually Vaughn's sites. E-mails were sent out froom these sites that distorted Nathan Vaughn's positions. Scott Gilmer, a state employee who works for House Republican Caucus Chairman Glen Casada of Franklin, set up the sites, and pled no contest in court. For his election efforts, Gilmer was compensated by both Mumpower and Casada for what was described as “consulting” in recent filings with the Tennessee Registry of Election Finance (TREF). Gilmer got $1,000 from Casada’s campaign account last December, $2,500 from Mumpower’s political action committee in January, and another $1,429.47 from Casada’s PAC last November, according to TREF. Yeah, these people are really "trustworthy."
During the elections, there were many complaints about the Shipley workers intimidating voters. It got so bad that at one point county deputies had to be called in because the "volunteers" were surrounding elderly people as they tried to enter the polling place and presumably "encouraged" that voting for Shipley would be in their best interest. Nothing says America like scaring old people, huh, Mr. Shipley?
If this proposed legislation was ever passed, I would shudder to think about the civilians' rights that would be violated with somebody like Shipley pushing for arrests.
Shipley needs to cool it!! I've been in the GOP for long and I'm over this junk!!!
Have any of you ever been to Kingsport? Do any of you ever get off your computer long enough to go meet the people you love to unabashedly bash?
I'm curious because I have met a lot of these people and more often than not, their words are taken out of context and made to sound ignorant/insane. Both Republican & Democrat are severely misrepresented by media outlets/bloggers that have their own political agenda.
The hypocrisy of the entire political situation in our country in very disconcerting and it makes me fear for our future.
