Bar Gun Bill Stalls in House in Fight Over Curfew

Posted by Jeff Woods on Mon, Mar 30, 2009 at 6:37 PM

The guns-in-saloons bill has stalled in the state House tonight with lawmakers fighting over whether they should set a curfew for customers to surrender their weapons. The sponsor, Rep. Curry Todd, thinks handgun carriers should have to give up their guns at 11 p.m. "The NRA was OK with this," Todd told the House. The House voted 62-29 to add the curfew to the bill. But many Republicans objected even to this restriction on Second Amendment rights, and Rep. Brian Kelsey then offered an amendment to strip the provision. After Todd could muster only 32 votes to table that amendment, he withdrew the bill from the floor. He said he'd try again next Monday. The House had been expected to adopt the bill by a large margin. There are 46 sponsors, and a cocky Todd said at one point, "If I asked all the co-sponsors to come up here, there wouldn't be anybody in their seats." He claimed his bill would curtail shootings presumably because criminals would quake in fear of all the licensed gunmen ready to spring into action. "I challenge anyone to tell me where they've had a shooting in a restaurant in any state that's passed this law," he said.

The curfew is arbitrary nonsense. I don't drink. I don't go to clubs. I don't go to "saloons". But if I want a bite after 11pm and the place happens to serve beer, I shouldn't have to leave my gun in a position to get stolen by the people who you should ACTUALLY be worried about.
Cops don't leave their guns in the cars...why should I have to? I am licensed to carry. Its illegal to drink and carry. The property owner doesn't have a problem with it....so what is YOUR problem? Why do you think you have a right to STIFLE democracy (the majority is FOR this) and decide what people do with their legally owned private property (that goes for the gun AND restaurant owner)? I know why...you are a fascist control freak. You call it "being progressive".
People that are going to use a gun are going to use a gun. They don't care about the "progressive" laws you are so proud of that actually accomplish nothing.
You enable criminals and endanger this fine state.

Alternately, you could just become a cop. Then you won't have to leave your gun in the car. Some things are just too obvious....

THE NRA WAS OK WITH THIS!!!!????
NRA members pay hard-earned money to the self described premier organization for the preservation of Second Amendment rights and they get "THE NRA WAS OK WITH THIS"?
WTH?

Like your & Mr. Woods' idiocy and lack of depth...But I thought "guns and booze don't mix"??? What are cops bringing guns into the same room as beer??? This is an outrage!!!! Cops kill innocent people with guns all the time. Haven't you read my blog???? This is insane!!!Something must be done before TN turns into the wild west....

"guns-in-saloons" bill?!
Say, Jeff Woods... you're not suggesting some
hint of "Old West" mythology here are you?
Why shouldn't licenced CCW holders be allowed to possess their firearm in a restaurant which serves alcohol?
Is the gun safer out in the parking lot?
Your article reads like anti-gun bias.

You have got to be kidding me.
Who's the genius that thinks it necessary to add guns to the already dangerous mix of alcohol, hormones and mental illness that every bar employee has to fight to keep in check every night.
WHAT THE HELL ?!!!!
