After the Alabama Rampage, We Load Up the Long Guns

America's many proud champions of the Second Amendment are complaining that the Alabama killing spree may lead to new calls for gun control. Indeed, there's a little congressional interest again in banning assault weapons like the one used by this week's gunman. Will Tennessee fall prey to such weakness? Hah! No worries. In fact, our legislature is more likely to pass a law requiring that every citizen buy an assault rifle, load it up and lug it around 24/7. Less than 24 hours after the killings, the House Judiciary Committee passed a bill allowing handgun permit holders to ride around with loaded rifles and shotguns in their vehicles. After the committee voted, the bill's sponsor, Rep. Henry Fincher, said he hadn't heard of the Alabama shootings yet, but no matter. If any of our courageous licensed gunmen had been nearby with their pistols, they would have killed the shooter before his death toll reached 10, Fincher said. So what we need are more, not fewer guns, right? Of course, in Alabama they have a handgun carry law like Tennessee's. The killer had a permit.

That's good, since there is no such thing as a collective responsibility for crime or crime prevention or, indeed, anything else on this earth as well.

Jeff...
Even though your pantie-wadded screeds on this subject are entertaining and eternally wrong, I've got to admire your tenacity.

Mr. Woods - the key attribute which separates an assault rifle from a (non-assault) rifle is select or full auto fire capability. Weapons which are selective or full auto capable are illegal. AFAIK the weapons used in the AL shooting were not selective/full auto and therefor were NOT assault rifles.
Mr. Martin - collective responsibility and cooperation are the cornerstone of all Western First World societies. Without them we would descend into anarchy, theocracy or totalitarianism.

While we all decry killings, whether or not by firearm, we also find that those who oppose firearms never -ever- mention the number of lives saved by firearms in the hands of honest citizens. The most reliable figures indicate more than 8000 a year above the number of deaths. Why do you wish to reduce freedom and prevent me from being able to defend myself?

Voluntary cooperation by individuals based on their own self-interest such as business partnerships or corporate ownership of businesses is a cornerstone.
Socialist notions of collective guilt for the actions of others or collective responsibility for the welfare of others is not.
