Mr. Woods - the key attribute which separates an assault rifle from a (non-assault) rifle is select or full auto fire capability. Weapons which are selective or full auto capable are illegal. AFAIK the weapons used in the AL shooting were not selective/full auto and therefor were NOT assault rifles.

While we all decry killings, whether or not by firearm, we also find that those who oppose firearms never -ever- mention the number of lives saved by firearms in the hands of honest citizens. Voluntary cooperation by individuals based on their own self-interest such as business partnerships or corporate ownership of businesses is a cornerstone.
Socialist notions of collective guilt for the actions of others or collective responsibility for the welfare of others is not.
