Rep. Frank Niceley Takes Commanding Lead in Legislature's Nutjob Standings

Posted by Pete Kotz on Mon, Mar 9, 2009 at 5:56 AM

And now for another installment in our continuing saga, Jesus Mother Mary Joseph, Where Do These People Come From? Today's star is Rep. Frank Niceley (R-Strawberry Plains), who's come up with his own ideas for TVA's massive toxic ash spill. He says it was caused by an earthquake, but not to worry. Arsenic is "not that bad." Though people near the site are suddenly coming down with all kinds of health problems, Niceley dismisses TVA's culpability. The Emory River is now loaded with dead fish and toxic waste, and has been measuring arsenic levels at 150 times what's safe for human consumption. Yet Niceley claims it's not any more toxic than your standard farm field. Moreover, he's blaming the state, not TVA, for the cleanup. In some lost universe where men still carry clubs and drool openly in public, his reasoning makes a lot of sense. But here on Earth, you get the sneaking feeling that even people from Mississippi are laughing at us.

Of course we all know the coal ash pond ruptured because of heavy rains. But so what, let's just say it ruptured because of an earthquake -- so what? The dam should have been built & maintained to withstand earthquakes AND heavy rains.
As for arsenic not being so bad, well, Rep. Nicely needs to get his head out of his butt.

This is what happens when kids aren't exposed to the theater. By god, in my day, you might have been bored stiff by "Arsenic and Old Lace" but by the end, you'd learned the simple fact that arsenic can kill people.
I really wonder about the mindset that says "I must protect the TVA against the people it made sick." I mean, you all the time hear these politicians talking about accountability, so why can't the TVA be accountable?

Has The Scene considered a weekly "Nutjob Power Ranking" similar to those compiled by ESPN and others for sports? That would be good reading.

Any assertion by Mr. Kotz that anyone is a "Nutjob" should be tempered by his missive less than a week ago avocating Tennessee Democrats start pushing a State Income Tax. On the otherhand, its takes one to know one I suppose.
