On the evening news, Channel 5's Phil Williams rolled a New York titty bar owner, weird rich dude Jack May, Bill Freeman, Gary Odom and Jason Mumpower all into one big giant shitball and slung it at supporters of the state's tax loophole for real-estate moguls. It was beautiful. "It's a Tennessee tax break meant for families," Williams' report begins. (Heh, heh.) "So how did a so-called strip club 'king' from New York end up taking advantage of the legal loophole?" Not only does adult entertainment czar Sam Zherka benefit from the FONCE tax break, so do out-of-state investors from 43 other states. Together, they escape Tennessee taxes on more than $1 billion in commercial property. We loved Mumpower's deer-in-the-headlights moment during the report. "Family-owned businesses are part of what has made this state and this nation great," he says at first. Informing Mumpower about the titty bar owner, Williams asks, "Is that your idea of a family-owned business?" "That wouldn't be, no," the Republican leader answers. Odom looks suitably stupid and knavish too as he tries to defend his support for the tax break and for his Belle Meade buddies. Is it time now for Democrats to unify behind the governor to close this loophole? Do you think?

I continue to be puzzled by Bredesen's actions, not really the Forrester thing, but especially this Odom FONCE thing. Philbot (name coined by Jeff Woods) is a guy who publicly attacks his sitting House leader in the press, tries to oust him from caucus leadership, and then acts surprised when Odom happens to disagree with him on an issue.
Phil. Tennessee is not a corporation and you cannot simply mandate law into existence from your underground bunker.

So Odom and Chipper are defending a tax break for their developer buddy, Freeman, and a peddler of pornography. How can you defend this, Chipinista?

This TNDP nightmare never ends. Chip, Odom, and Freeman are siding with Mumpower and a strip club owner? Well, I guess Freeman is defending his own tax break.
I'm one Democrat that agrees with Bredesen. The state needs money, and these people can pay their fair share.

Knavish seems about the right word. I think Democrats are long overdue in coming together to close this loophole. If Mr. Odom does not go along with it, he should be ejected from his leadership post.

This whole Odom/Mumpower Titty Bar Loophole stinks to the high heavens. Come on, Odom's treasurer, the Tennessee Democrat Party's treasurer sucks up millions each year through this loophole, but Odom expects us to believe that he and Chipper only oppose closing it because there haven't been enough committee hearings on the subject. Do I even have to call bullshit on that?
And these nimrods wonder why Tennesseans puke in their mouths a little every time they hear the words "General Assembly."

I missed this report because I went to bed early last night. But I woke up laughing. How dumb can Chip, Odom, Freeman and Jennifer Buck Wallace (a.k.a. La Femme Chip) be for opposing the closing of this scurrilous wealthy tax loophole?

Mike Turner And Jim Kyle have filed the FONCE bill and are planning on passing it.

Good for Turner and Kyle, but it's apparent that Bill Freeman won't allow Odom and Chip Forrester to join them. Yesterday, Turner and Henry Fincher stood up for higher wages for tipped employees. Odom and Chip were nowhere to be found. I guess Freeman must own restaurants too.

Who will run against Gary Odom and when?

Terrific. Now if only the Tennessee Democratic Party and its clueless chairman and wealthy tax loophole-loving/GOP-giving treasurer will get behind the issue.

This whole spectacle illustrates the basic problems with the Dems in TN, who seem to go out of their way to appear 1-corrupt, 2-inept, 3-valueless, 4-petty and 5-incapable of standing up for average Tennesseans. Both sides of the Chip/Bredesen debacle are about as attractive/inspiring as vultures fighting over a carcass - the polar opposite of an Obama, who is dignified, pragmatic, and gives voice to shared core principles that are more populist/progressive than they are liberal or conservative. Until Democrats here can follow an Obama model of leadership, they are lost.

I agree with Odom and Mumpower. A tax break to encourage titty bars to relocate to Tennessee is a great idea. Let's import more strippers. I'm all for it. I am understanding this correctly, right?

I agree that these people should bust out their wallets and pay. They've been suckling at the public teat for too long. Thanks for keeping us abreast of this situation.

ODOM, FORRESTER PROTECT TAX BREAK FOR FAT CAT PAL

NASHVILLE – House Democrat Leader (in name only) Gary Odom and bumbling Tennessee Democratic Party chairman Eugene “Chip” Forrester today unveiled their abject whoredom to the world by announcing their opposition to Governor Phil Bredesen’s effort to close an indefensible tax giveaway to multimillionaire real estate tycoons, known in polite company as the FONCE.
“Look, folks, do you think J. Alexander’s is cheap?” Odom slurred. “Daddy’s gotta have some cash.”
While neither Odom nor Forrester would admit their motivation on record, every adult Tennessean without severe brain damage realizes their opposition is motivated by the base desire to protect the FONCE of Bill Freeman, the multi-millionaire sleezeball real estate developer that just happens to be treasurer for Odom’s re-election campaign and what is left of Forrester’s TNDP.
“I have the nuts of an underdeveloped chipmunk,” Forrester said. “I couldn’t take a public position on anything if I wanted to.
“Gary and Bill might yell at me.”
Supporters of Bredesen’s effort argue that the state, faced with a budget shortfall of approximately $1 billion, needs the added revenue to fund public education and other necessary state services. The Tennessee Department of Revenue estimates that the FONCE loophole costs the state somewhere in the neighborhood of $45 million annually.
Told of this line of reasoning, Odom replied (with a noticably thick tongue), “Show me a third grader that can max out to my campaign and we’ll talk.”
Odom and Forrester’s opposition appears particularly slimy today following a scathing report last night from NewsChannel5 investigative reporter Phil Williams that revealed the tax loophole protects $55 million for a New York titty bar tycoon.
“Sweet!” Odom said.
Bredesen’s bill is being carried in the House by Democratic Caucus chairman Myke Turner.
“WHAT THE FUCK?” Turner said when told of Odom and Forrester’s opposition. “NOBODY TELLS ME SHIT.”
Odom and Forrester’s announcement came a day after Tennessee Republican Party chairthing Robin Smith announced its opposition to Bredesen’s attempt to make our economic overlords pay their fair share of taxes.
Harrison and Heatseeker did not respond to requests for comment.
