Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal: The Next Contestant on Are You An American Citizen?

Posted by Caleb Hannan on Thu, Feb 26, 2009 at 6:50 AM

Before Tuesday night, popular opinion had it that Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal was the GOP's next big hope. Young, telegenic and, well, brown-skinned (where have we seen this formula before?) the Jindal in '12 signs were practically printed, packaged and vacuum-sealed.

Then Jindal gave the State of the Union rebuttal. A speech that conservative David Brooks, in one of the more generous assessments, described as a "disaster for the Republican party" (see vidoe above).

One of the less generous assessments? That'd come courtesty of the comments section in right-wing blogs like this one. First take:

Jindal is just another man...better than a woman I guess. What is his foreign policy experience. Also, is he a natural born citizen? I heard his parents were not naturalized at the time of his birth. Give me Sarah or give me death.
Ahh yes, the unholy marriage of Obama conspiracists to Palin supporters. Revelations warned us this day would come.

telegenic? Dude looks like Skeletor in a blue blazer. Btw, did anyone watch the rebuttal on MSNBC? Perhaps it was the late night feed, but Olbermann can be heard saying an exasperated "Oh God" as Jindal ambled in front of the camera.

Mark that was actually Chris Matthews who said that, but Rachel's response to Jindal was classic.

Mark, I think Jindal was telegenic up until last night. Then he had to go and walk into view from somewhere off-camera like a demented Mr. Rogers.
Here's Chris Matthews explanation of the "Oh God" moment.

I just read that and returned to amend my statement. Brotha still looks like Skeletor, though.

The Republicants worship Jindal the same way the Democrats worship Obama. They both appear to be decent people, but that's about it.
I can't help but notice, however, that Republicants say Barack Hussein Obama every chance they get, but give Piyush Jindal a pass on his "Muslim" name.

"better than a woman I guess...give me Sarah or give me death."
Do these Repubs know something about Palin that the rest of us don't?

I heard another commentator say Jindal reminded him of Kenneth the Page from 30 Rock.
Anyways, I was thinking the same thing about Jindal's parents being immigrants and what the wing-nuts would say about that. They will probably be consistent, especially since Palin is their real darling. I still haven't figured out what is so difficult about the natural born citizen concept to these guys. It's pretty cut and dry. If you're born here, you're eligible to be president. Period. I don't care if Osama freaking Bin Ladin is your dad. If you were born here, you are a natural born citizen.
