Legalized Marijuana: Our Economy's Leafy Savior?

One California pol thinks he has the stickiest, ickiest answer to his state's mountain of debt: Legalize pot.

San Francisco assemblyman Tom Ammiano wants to allow all Californians over 21 (not just the ones with glaucoma, wink wink) to buy weed. His projected grass-gross from the heavily-taxed bud: $1.3 billion.

Ammiano's bill has as much chance of passing the Left Coast's legislature as a hotboxed Honda does of getting out of a Metro PD traffic stop. But according to Statistician Superstar Nate Silver, the Californian kind-fan may be on to something.

With the help of fancy graphs, Silver predicts that 60% of the country will be in favor of legalization by the year 2022. At which point he says "things will get interesting" (Far out, man!).

Of course, given the progressive nature of Tennessee's current legislative agenda (guns in saloons and overly warm parking garages), we can expect Mary Jane to walk the streets of Nashville safely sometime around the year 3000.

Extra Credit: For a look at how Tennessee reacts to its citizens growing weed to help ease the pain of the sick and dying check out "Marijuana Martyr," Jeff Woods' April 2007 cover story on the prosecution of public health official Bernie Ellis.

I can't believe this is even an issue. Marijuana laws are the most idiotic laws, ever, in the whole history of the universe.

“I think people need to be educated to the fact that marijuana is not a drug. Marijuana is an herb and a flower. God put it here. If He put it here and He wants it to grow, what gives the government the right to say that God is wrong?”

Maybe, but I predict Tennessee will legalize before Utah and Oklahoma do. Yeah, baby.

I'm hoping we beat Arkansas too, chris. That'd make for one mighty trio.

Think of the revenue loss in speeding tickets! So we can all get the munchies and eat up all that roadkill.

I guess that makes opium not a drug either, since it is also a plant or an herb and a flower. God put it here too. Open the opium dens too!
I am so tired of hearing those weak arguments for marijuana, get a real argument! God put pretty much everything here or gave people the intelligence to create or abuse it.

Actually, opium is not a plant, but the "sap" from the immature poppy plant.
Opium contains the alkaloids codeine and morphine which are both LEGAL for medicinal purposes.
Anyways, the issue shouldn't be about what God, or the Flying Spaghetti Monster created, but about a person's right to do whatever he/she wants with their body.
If people are allowed to ingest harmful substances such as cigarettes, alcohol, prescription drugs, fast food, then they should be allowed to ingest marijuana.
Having a selective policy as to what people are and aren't allowed to put in their body does nothing but undermine the respect of law.
Either legalize, or prohibit all harmful stubstances..period.

SuzyQ how about you be quiet and realize that the government doesn't have the right to tell us what we can and can't do if people choose to do marijuana or meth or anyother drug that it is their choice And not the governments. Plus the politicians have their heads so far up their asses that they dnt see that weed is a nearly harmless drug and should be legalized

Its pathetic our gov cant just admit that they were wrong in making it illegal in the first place, just swallow it now, it will only get harder the longer it keeps getting put off. How many years has it been illegal, and how many American tax dollars have we spent trying to rid it from our society? How successful has it been? all the arguments to keep it illegal are just as pathetic. people say were sending the wrong message to our kids, well what kind of message do they get when they try marijuana and find out it doesn't kill them, or even give them a hangover for that matter, the WRONG one, because then they wonder what other drugs the gov has lied about. The gov lies are the real gateway, wake up America, you cant stop it, and its the people right anyway.

To keep Cannabis illegal while tobacco and alcohol are dispensed freely is murderously stupid.

The civil war was started over states' rights. The people of the south believed that they had the right to own slaves.A war was fought, Americans against Americans, because of this principle. Now a large percentage of Californians are consuming marijuana, and are tired of being treated like criminals.Marijuana may have some supposed health risks, but is it inhumane? It is the cure for bordom. It makes u laugh, and isn't laughter the best medicine? Maybe someone doesn't have a health plan, and can't afford to get anti-depressents or pain medicine, so instead grit their teeth, wipe a tear, and smoke a joint..... Who stocks your shelves, who makes your burgers, who sells your liquor, who mowes your lawns,... who delivers your pizza, who digs your ditches, who works midnight shifts, through all the yawns,...who blows their money, all up in sm0ke,... could it be your moms? Taxation and legalization of marijuana is the only reasonable thing to do this broken economy. We tax many "legitimate" addictions ...money, oil, cigs, commercial goods, and even hot food.

I have recently found hydroponic gardening to grow my herbs all year long. I used to grow them outdoors, but had problems with animals and pests. Now I have moved my garden indoors and began growing my garden with hydroponics. The plants grow faster and the organic results are fantastic. I would reccomend hydroponics to anyone looking to grow vegetables all year. Hydroponic gardening is a lot better than traditional soil gardens in my opinion. Just my 2 cents. I hope this helps...
