Stupid Idea of the Day: Jerry Cooper Highway

Stupid Idea of the Day: Naming a highway after Jerry Cooper. Sen. Eric Stewart says Cooper's former constituents are demanding it. "He's a native of Warren County. He worked hard to improve transportation, improve roads in Warren County and throughout the district," Stewart says. Cooper resigned in disgrace from the state Senate in 2007 after committing a long list of transgressions, including almost killing himself in a drunken driving crash. He stole $94,000 from his reelection campaign account. His theft came to light during his trial on federal bank fraud charges when an IRS agent testified Cooper had withdrawn the money. He was acquitted in that trial but then fined $120,000 by the state for taking the campaign cash. Last we heard, he was still making payments. Cooper has a really fuzzy memory of what he did with that money. "I'm really not sure," he told reporters at the time. "I don't have any receipts, what I spent that money for.... Can you remember what you did a year ago? I mean, I just can't remember." But he wasn't too worried about it. His contributors didn't seem to care that he stole the money they gave his campaign, he said. "It's been in the news, what, maybe a month or two months or something--and I've not had one person call me." For once, it's hard to argue with Rep. Stacey Campfield. "Who we going to honor next? John Ford?" he asks. "What kind of message is that sending to people? That it's OK to do these things, and that if you are high enough power you can get rewarded for it, even have roads named after you?"

I think we should set up tollbooths and charge a usage fee for vehicles on the Jerry Cooper Highway. We could legalize drinking and driving along this stretch of road and solicit bribes for liquor licenses from local entrepreneurs to open liquor stores, bars, convenience stores and maybe even a couple restaurants. Property values would skyrocket as investors drove up the prices generating greater tax revenue. This would provide jobs for clerks, cashiers, waitresses, tow truck drivers, ambulance drivers and auto body repairmen. This plan would attract visitors from surrounding states thus recovering revenue lost to legalized gambling. Sounds like a "Win Win" situation to me.

Jeff,
I recently visited the Nashville Scene on 12th Ave. When I brought your name up to a staff member she simply laughed and reported that you did free lance work for the Scene.
In a Repub. state it is only logical for someone seeking positive feedback to criticize the unfavored party. You do this all to often.
I interned for Sen. Cooper and have worked tirelessly in the 14th Senatorial District. The people of this district respect Jerry for the statesman that he is. 20+ years of public service cannot be tarnished by a biased freelance writer who spends most of his time 'beating dead horses'.
Jeff, teach us something. Dont make politics out to be even more of a soap opera. The naming of this road bears no concern on you or anyone else outside of Warren,Grundy, Sequatchie, Van Buren, Bledsoe, Franklin and Coffee Counties. If you feel like the road itself is unnecessary you should voice your concern. If not, stay out of it!
