'Only God Should Move Mountains'

If anything good comes from the TVA coal ash spill, maybe it'll be a law to ban coal companies from blowing the tops off our mountains. The church-going conservationists fighting to save Tennessee's mountains are trying to capitalize on the TVA disaster. Their bill failed last year. This year, they're scoring political points by pointing out that coal sludge ponds, like those that failed in Kingston, are located at all mountaintop mining sites. They are filled with a witch's brew of waste that's much more toxic than the fly ash ponds that broke in Kingston last December.

"Much of the economy of East Tennessee and the Cumberland region is based on the value of scenic vistas, not mountaintop removal mining," says Dawn Coppock, leader of the environmental group LEAF, a coalition of church groups across Tennessee. "That is why our state legislators should act now to protect our scenic mountains."

More from Coppock: "LEAF believes it's time for all people of faith to help protect our communities, our economy and the gift of God's creation. Only God should move mountains."

The LEAF legislation was scheduled to go before the Senate Environment Committee this week, but action was delayed for more behind-the-scenes wrangling.

This seems like such a no-brainer. Too bad the folks on the hill have no brains.

It is absurd that we continue to allow our mountains and streams to be forever destroyed just because mountaintop removal saves King Coal a little money.
