Hypothermia May Have Killed Nashville Musician/Writer

Posted by Brantley Hargrove on Wed, Feb 25, 2009 at 11:36 AM

Kimberly Risburg, the Nashville musician and freelance writer found dead along the shore of Woods Reservoir near the University of Tennessee Space Institute in Tullahoma Monday likely died of hypothermia after becoming disoriented.

Risburg had been visiting friends in McMinnville Sunday when she became upset and left, according to the Tullahoma News and Guardian. She struck a deer and left her vehicle to go check on the animal. The weather was frigid, and she walked along the shoreline for about 1,000 yards without a coat.

It would appear that she became lost and succumbed to the cold. Her car was parked over on the causeway and was found Sunday. Police towed it to the impound lot before discovering it belonged to Risburg.

What an odd story. What was she upset about? And assuming there was physical evidence that she struck a deer, how do they know she went to check on it?

It's all pretty much conjecture at this point, WW. This is the police theory, and it seems like they're still trying to put the pieces together. That said, I don't think they've ruled out foul play.

Police are still working on this case. I'm trying to figure out what Risburg would be doing out near UTSI when coming from McMinnville. It's quite a bit out of the way and a pretty secluded area. The only way I know to get to UTSI is back roads. People have hit deer and cows on those roads. The idea that she hit a deer is highly possible. Of course, to determine that police probably found damage to the vehicle along with hair from the deer on the vehicle. Police most likely have not ruled out foul play - and I'm sure when they get the toxicology reports back they will be able to determine if she was under the influence of alcohol or any other drug.
