But the other side isn't lacking for evidence, either. For starters, there's Democratic leader Gary Odom behaving like a hillbilly Machiavelli. He kicked his nemesis Jimmy Naifeh to the curb to elevate a bumbling backbench Republican to the speaker's podium. Now, Odom can't stop boasting about it, as if it's something to be proud of.
Beyond power, what do House Democrats care about? In his oped, Turner worries over families struggling in the terrible economy. But the session's six weeks old, and Democrats haven't said yet how they'll help. Turner, the party's House caucus chair, has been promising a Democratic action agenda for a couple of weeks. No one is expecting much more than a windy press release.
In this debate, the Commercial Appeal is torn. Its editors can't decide which is worse: Rep. Brian Kelsey's call for the governor to reject the federal stimulus money, or House Democrats' threats to retaliate by withholding projects from Germantown, where the Commercial Appeal sells a lot of ads. "Perhaps the rhetoric on both sides should be waved off as one more indicator of a partisan divide in the House that has created opportunities for political gamesmanship," the paper says. That's a polite way to put it.
