Yesterday, the HUD secretary announced that nearly $18 million will go from the U.S. Treasury to the state of Tennessee in the form of grants aimed at helping the homeless. Nashville area shelters, transitional housing and skills development centers will receive more than $3 million of that money. According to a HUD presser, the funding is directed at "permanent and transitional housing to homeless persons" as well as "job training, health care, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment and child care." This might seem like a lot of money, but considering we spend $16 billion a month in Afghanistan--to say nothing of what that new stimulus bill will cost-- it's really peanuts.
