Speaking through a tool publication in Williams' home territory, the Business Journal of Tricities, they're raising alarms that Williams--working in league with those crafty Democrats--might try to sneak through some kind of business tax or fee increase. (They're a little fuzzy on the details.)
Gamesmanship is now once again the rule in the House if gridlock is to be avoided, and Republicans who had planned on having an inside straight to the spending cuts they say will address the shortfall have seen those plans flushed. Though the Senate remains firmly in GOP hands, it now seems likely that the state will look for some new revenue sources, and that at least one of those sources will be a hike in fees relating to business and the environment. "At the budget hearings, the governor brought up the question of, 'Why doesn't the regulated community pay the full cost of the environmental program?'" says [Deb] Woolley, [Tennessee Chamber of Commerce president]. After this legislative session, it just might.
In an editorial, the magazine was forced to concede that "[a]s far as business goes, Williams was a consistently pro-business voter in his first term." But at the same time, the editors all but promised to campaign against the speaker's reelection: "In the short term, Williams has pulled off a political coup unimaginable to his Republican peers. In the long term, well, let us be the first to congratulate Jerome Cochran on his 2010 GOP primary win for the Fourth District Tennessee House seat."
Staffers at the state GOP headquarters liked the magazine's issue so much they wrote a blog post about it.

I am a Carter County resident and I will not be voting for Cochran IF he's crazy enough to run again. I don't know how many times that crew of his will hit our town, but they have to be brainless if they do it again. that's why I expect them to do it in a way. everybody I know was mad at them for that. I'm a business owner and environmental advocate for years. I know Kent Williams through business associates and would never think he would add additional tax on top of everything else we're expected to shoulder. I am curious as to who the magazine is owned and published by. these boys and that Smith girl who got beat at their own game are just sore and they're losers all the way around. My proof is that they have resorted to lying and smearing and posturing. I say let them continue this way. They will beat themselves again next year. we don't like their coming here and thinking we're going to forget the good things we know about Rep. Williams just because they lie. all this shit can go around in the rest of the state where people don't know Kent Williams and they can run their mouths about stuff they don't know anything about. we know the truth here and We do the voting. everybody will see that he'll do a good job.
