Like a Tree Falling in the Forest, TSEA Holds a Rally Without the Media

The Tennessee State Employees Association scheduled a rally for noon today for the benefit of TV stations, then held the event early and left by the time the cameras arrived. Guess it was good enough for government work. Turns out there was no need for the media event anyway, as reporters learned.

The ostensible point was to protest work rule changes proposed by Gov. Phil Bredesen. But the TSEA's Martha Wettemann acknowledged state employees already have worked out a deal with Bredesen that settles all their problems, which center on grievance and seniority rights during layoffs.

"It's not over until the fat lady sings," she insisted. "When we see the amendment on the bill, we'll be excited and glad he's followed through on his agreement. That'll be great."
